Ridley Scott’s Risky $403 Sci-Fi “Redeemed” By Incredible Casting Becomes A Charts-Topping Global Netflix Hit 14 Years Later

Fourteen years after it first came out in theaters, Ridley Scott’s 2012 movie Prometheus is suddenly becoming very popular on streaming services around the world.

The science fiction film signaled director Ridley Scott’s return to the Alien series, which he originally launched with the 1979 film. Prometheus features a stellar cast including Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce, Logan Marshall-Green, Sean Harris, and Rafe Spall.

Years after its release, Prometheus is now a popular streaming success, currently ranking as the most-watched movie on Netflix worldwide as of February 17, 2026. The rest of the Top 10 includes State of Fear, Joe’s College Road Trip, Reunion, A Father’s Miracle, Cradle 2 the Grave, The Rip, Dhurandhar, Wrath of the Titans, and Rumble.

The film is currently number one in Australia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Lithuania, New Zealand, Norway, Qatar, Slovenia, and Sweden. It’s the second most popular film in Belgium, Chile, the Czech Republic, France, Italy, Latvia, Mexico, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Spain, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.

Prometheus is proving popular with viewers, ranking among the top 10 streaming titles in a wide range of countries including Argentina, the Bahamas, Bahrain, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, and many others across the Americas, Europe, and the Middle East.

Rounding out the top ten countries are Martinique, Mauritius, and Morocco, followed by the Netherlands, New Caledonia, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Oman, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the Philippines, Portugal, Reunion, El Salvador, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, South Africa, Switzerland, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, Ukraine, the United Arab Emirates, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

The film is not available on Netflix in the United States, though it can be streamed on HBO Max.

When Prometheus came out in theaters in 2012, reviews were generally positive, though some were mixed. As of today, it has a 73% rating from critics and a 68% rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. While some critics felt the movie didn’t fully address the questions fans were hoping for, they praised its impressive visuals and strong cast, which helped make the Alien prequel worthwhile.

Written by Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof, Prometheus revisits the origins of the Alien franchise, exploring the question of human creation. The film follows a spaceship crew as they journey to a remote military installation and uncover surprising truths.

Following his work on the original Alien, Ridley Scott passed the directorial duties for the subsequent films – Aliens, Alien 3, and Alien Resurrection – to James Cameron, David Fincher, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet. After an 18-year absence, Scott took a chance by returning to the series with Prometheus, which ultimately served as a foundational backstory for the Alien universe.

Critics generally loved the movie Prometheus, and it was a major financial success, earning $403 million worldwide on a $130 million budget. It’s still the highest-earning film in the Alien franchise, both in the US and internationally, and it also had the biggest budget of any film in the series.

Following Prometheus, Ridley Scott revisited the series with Alien: Covenant. More recently, Fede Álvarez directed Alien: Romulus. The Alien universe has also expanded with a TV show, Alien: Earth, and two films that crossed over with the Predator franchise: Alien vs. Predator and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem.

Although 20th Century Studios hasn’t revealed any plans for future Alien movies, director Ridley Scott has said he’d be open to making another one after Prometheus and Covenant, as long as he develops a compelling story idea.
