Be warned, this contains spoilers for the final episode of Tell Me Lies. The series has ended, filled with conflict, heartbreak, and plenty of drama, but viewers are disappointed with how things wrapped up for a key character, leaving some important questions unresolved.
This Hulu drama series, which premiered in 2022, is adapted from a novel by Carola Lovering. It explores the damaging effects of an unhealthy and overly dependent relationship, not just on the couple involved, but also on their friends and family. The show follows Lucy Albright (Grace Van Patten) and Stephen DeMarco (Jackson White) over eight years, charting their relationship from college through a shocking wedding.
The third season of Tell Me Lies will be its last, according to creator and showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer. She announced the series finale in an Instagram post, explaining that this was the planned ending for her and the writing team, and that they were very proud of how it concluded. Despite this, many fans have voiced their frustration with the character Lucy Albright, who they feel is responsible for much of the drama in the show.
The final episode of the show pushed Lucy to her limit as she dealt with a painful betrayal. While she initially felt relieved to recover a video where she confessed to lying, she soon learned that her best friend, Bree (played by Catherine Missal), was the one who leaked it. Bree discovered Lucy was having an affair with her boyfriend, Evan (played by Branden Cook), and leaked the video as revenge.
Lucy’s actions resulted in her being kicked out of Baird College. Years later, at Bree and Evan’s wedding in 2015, Stephen exposed some shocking secrets, revealing Bree’s role in what happened to Lucy. Lucy was then faced with a difficult choice: try to repair her friendship with Bree or run away with Stephen. True to form, she chose Stephen, causing a lot of drama. But this is Tell Me Lies, so predictably, Stephen ultimately abandoned Lucy at a gas station, and Lucy actually seemed relieved.
People immediately took to social media to express their sadness about Lucy’s choice and the show ending, as well as regret over the decisions made by the characters – and even their own viewing choices.
