There’s new information about the upcoming reboot of the film series directed by Zach Cregger, and fans might not be thrilled. Oliver Berben, CEO of Constantin Film, talked about the reboot, calling the original films the company’s biggest success – they’ve earned a total of $1.2 billion in ticket sales.
Fans can expect a fresh take on the franchise. Director Zach Cregger, known for his unique style in horror films like Barbarian and Weapons, is giving the reboot a completely new direction, according to Berben.
He added that he and his company had given the director, who was born in Arlington, Virginia, complete creative freedom with the project.
According to Berben, the Resident Evil franchise has been remarkably successful, generating over a billion dollars in box office revenue over the years. Now, they’re aiming to do something different – not just tell a new story, but empower a new generation to reimagine the franchise and create their own unique experiences with it.
The Resident Evil Movies Are Heading in a New Direction
It’s not certain whether Berben meant the new film will be a departure from previous Resident Evil movies, or from the video games that inspired them. The first six live-action Resident Evil films combined action and horror, taking inspiration from the games’ lore but creating their own unique stories instead of directly adapting specific game plots.
The 2021 movie Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City closely followed the storylines of the first two Resident Evil games. This came alongside a Resident Evil television series being developed for Netflix.
The Resident Evil series gained popularity by creating the survival horror genre, where players controlled vulnerable characters – a contrast to the powerful heroes common in other games. One notable game featured Leon Kennedy, a skilled agent, who bravely infiltrated a terrifying cult to save the President’s daughter. Since then, the series has shifted back and forth between focusing on intense survival and fast-paced action.
With his recent success as a director, it’s no surprise that Zach Cregger was chosen to revitalize the Resident Evil film series. His 2021 film, Barbarian, was a surprise hit, earning a significant return on its small $4.5 million budget with a $45 million gross. He followed that up with another successful film in 2025, which earned $270 million on a $38 million budget.
Principal photography for Johannes Roberts’ Resident Evil started in Prague in October 2025. The film features Austin Abrams, Paul Walter Hauser, Zach Cherry, and Kali Reis, and was co-written by Roberts and Shay Hatten. The movie is scheduled for release in theaters on September 18.
