CyberConnect2’s 30th anniversary game revealed as .hack//Z.E.R.O. action RPG for consoles

To celebrate its 30th anniversary, CyberConnect2 announced it’s working on a new game called .hack//Z.E.R.O. The company confirmed in a press release that the game will be an action RPG for consoles.

CyberConnect2 is well-known for creating the .hack games, but Bandai Namco still owns the rights to the franchise. However, Bandai Namco has allowed CyberConnect2 to fully handle and release the new .hack//Z.E.R.O. game on their own.

The first look at .hack//Z.E.R.O. (also known as Project Dusk) reveals the core team behind the project. Hiroshi Matsuyama, CEO of CyberConnect2 (known as “Piros”), is executive producer. Seiichiro Hosokawa will design the characters, and Chikayo Fukuda will compose the main soundtrack, with Taro Hakase creating the theme song.

Soon after the game was first shown, Famitsu released an interview with Matsuyama that they did in early January. Here are some of the most important things he shared:

  • While the trailer shows characters who look like Kite, BlackRose, and Balmung, Matsuyama has specified that Z.E.R.O. will have no connections with any past series entries, so that people who are not well-versed in .hack can still get into this game.
  • “The World” online game is also returning, but .hack//Z.E.R.O. will take place about 10 years later than the current time, where social media has also become more prevalent.
  • While prior series games featured emails and forums for depicting real-world communications, Z.E.R.O. will depict more real-world drama between humans in their flesh.
  • An evil corporation will also appear in Z.E.R.O.’s story, but there will be more emphasis on what the net society looks like in the present era. The current network has two layers, where one shows the public faces of corporations, and the other hosts people’s hidden opinions. The story will particularly depict such multiple layers of society as the main enemies.

The first teaser trailer for .hack//Z.E.R.O. is available to watch right here, originally released on CyberConnect2’s channel.

CyberConnect2 is celebrating 30 years in business on February 16, 2026, and to mark the occasion, they’re creating a new .hack game called .hack//Z.E.R.O. for home consoles.

The .hack series has always been a collaboration between CyberConnect2, who develops the games, and Bandai Namco Entertainment, who publishes them. However, with .hack//Z.E.R.O., Bandai Namco is letting CyberConnect2 handle the entire project themselves – from the initial planning stages to the final release. This will be the first .hack title fully developed and published by CyberConnect2 alone.

World-renowned violinist Taro Hakase has penned the music, kick-starting the project to the dexterous tune of his violin. .hack//Z.E.R.O. will be a novel RPG experience that blends the series’ trademark duality of fantasy (game world) and reality (real world) with modern expectations, infused with 100% pure CyberConnect2 spirit. The game will be enjoyable for both veteran fans and new players alike. Please look forward to this newest iteration of .hack.
