The popular Star Wars saga is coming back to theaters, and here’s a look at the upcoming films, ranked from most to least anticipated. Star Wars has primarily been a film franchise, with television series becoming more common later on. Before the late 2000s and early 2010s, the first two trilogies by George Lucas were released before the franchise explored animated series and other TV formats.
After the original saga, Lucasfilm tried to continue the story with a new trilogy, but those films really split the fanbase. It felt like they were searching for the right path forward, and eventually, they found it with Disney+ and shows like The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and the surprisingly mature Andor. Now, after a few years focusing on television, it looks like Lucasfilm is ready to bring Star Wars back to the big screen with a new set of movies, and they’re hoping to recapture that cinematic magic.
From the various series inspired by The Mandalorian to standalone films, movies continuing the stories of the sequel characters, and new adventures set in a different time, here’s a look at every Star Wars movie currently in development, ordered from most to least anticipated.
7. Taika Waititi’s Star Wars Movie
While Taika Waititi was once highly sought after for his directing skills – demonstrated in films like Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Thor: Ragnarok, and Jojo Rabbit – his upcoming Star Wars movie is considered the least anticipated of the new films. His success with those projects led to his involvement with The Mandalorian and eventually, the announcement of his own Star Wars film.
Okay, so when Taika Waititi announced he was doing a Star Wars movie, everyone got super hyped. But honestly, that excitement has cooled off a bit. His last couple of films, Thor: Love and Thunder and Next Goal Wins, really split audiences, and on top of that, we still know almost nothing about this Star Wars project. We have no idea when in the Star Wars universe it’s set, what it’s even about, or who’s going to be in it – whether they’re familiar faces or brand new characters. It’s frustratingly vague at this point.
Right now, it’s hard to get very enthusiastic about Taika Waititi’s upcoming Star Wars movie. That could definitely change as we learn more, but until then, we’re more excited about the other Star Wars films that are currently in the works.
6. Dave Filoni’s New Republic Movie
When announced in April 2023, a new movie directed by Dave Filoni set in the Star Wars New Republic era generated a lot of excitement. The Mandalorian was already popular, and fans were eagerly anticipating Ahsoka. Because of this, many people hoped for a big, cinematic conclusion that would tie these stories together.
Three years later, the initial enthusiasm has faded somewhat. While a final movie continuing the story of the New Republic still sounds appealing – enough to put it ahead of Taika Waititi’s planned film – both projects are currently facing similar uncertainty. Details are scarce for both, though the confirmed return of characters like Din Djarin, Ahsoka, and Grand Admiral Thrawn gives the New Republic movie a slight advantage.
News that the film has been delayed, following Dave Filoni’s expected appointment as Lucasfilm CEO in 2026, has created even more uncertainty about the future of the New Republic storyline. Similar to the situation with Taika Waititi’s project, interest in Filoni’s film will probably increase as more concrete information becomes available.
Currently, the only upcoming Star Wars movie considered less interesting than Taika Waititi’s project is the one still connected to the story of The Mandalorian.
5. The Mandalorian and Grogu
The next Star Wars movie will tell the story of The Mandalorian and Grogu, and is scheduled to come out in May 2026. If released sooner, perhaps after season 2 of The Mandalorian, it likely would have been the most anticipated film in the lineup. However, current feelings about The Mandalorian series have shifted, which impacts how excited people are for this movie.
Season 3 of The Mandalorian wasn’t as strong as previous seasons, and the early promotion for the upcoming The Mandalorian and Grogu movie hasn’t been very exciting. The trailers released so far haven’t made a compelling case for why this story needed to be a movie, suggesting it’s primarily driven by financial goals.
The movie still has the potential to be a lot of fun. We’re hoping the next trailer, which should give us a better idea of the story and characters, will be more exciting than what we’ve seen so far.
Despite the initial buzz, The Mandalorian and Grogu movie seems to have lost some of its appeal, and many people are now neither excited nor disappointed about it.
4. Rey’s New Jedi Order Movie
Despite the strong dislike some fans have for Rey Skywalker, I’m actually excited about the idea of a movie focusing on her training a new group of Jedi. The film, set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker, has a lot of potential, and the fact that Daisy Ridley is returning is a major reason why I’m optimistic about it.
Not much else is known about the movie yet, but several factors are generating excitement. With Ridley returning, a fresh look at the Jedi, appearances from characters in the sequel trilogy, and the story expanding beyond The Rise of Skywalker, plus the talented Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy directing, this project is starting to feel genuinely promising.
3. Simon Kinberg’s Star Wars Trilogy
Simon Kinberg is reportedly developing a new Star Wars trilogy – potentially Episodes X, XI, and XII – continuing the Skywalker Saga. While this hasn’t been officially confirmed, it’s definitely exciting news for fans.
We still know very little about these upcoming projects – details like the story, characters, and when they take place are scarce. However, the idea of a new Star Wars trilogy guided by one creative person is really promising. This is the first time since George Lucas was actively involved that a single person will be leading the story for an entire trilogy.
The original trilogy suffered because three different directors each had their own ideas, making the films feel disjointed. With Kinberg leading a new trilogy, there’s hope for a more cohesive story. His experience writing for Star Wars Rebels is also a promising sign.
The animated series Rebels is a standout Star Wars show, and Bryan Kinberg played a key role in its success – he wrote several of its best episodes and helped create the series. This demonstrates his strong understanding of the Star Wars galaxy. Coupled with the exciting prospect of a new story, this made the three related movies highly anticipated by fans.
2. Star Wars: Starfighter
The newly announced Star Wars: Starfighter is generating a lot of excitement, especially because it’s scheduled to come out sooner than the previously announced The Mandalorian and Grogu film. This suggests Lucasfilm had a strong vision for the movie and that filming with director Shawn Levy progressed well.
Most recent Star Wars films from Disney haven’t been very exciting, but Star Wars: Starfighter looks promising. Unlike other upcoming projects from directors like Waititi, Filoni, and Obaid-Chinoy, Starfighter has already given us some clear information – we know Ryan Gosling will be the lead actor, and that was announced when the movie was first revealed.
Adding Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Flynn Gray, and Aaron Pierre to the cast quickly generated more buzz about the movie, which finished filming in December 2025.
Unlike The Mandalorian and Grogu, which had trailers that some felt hurt anticipation, the upcoming Star Wars movie, Starfighter, is still generating a lot of excitement. It boasts a talented cast, an experienced director, a smooth production process, and a promising story.
1. Dawn of the Jedi
While details have been scarce since it was first announced, Dawn of the Jedi is shaping up to be the most exciting of the new Star Wars projects in development. When it was revealed alongside plans for a New Republic story and Rey’s return to the galaxy, it quickly became the most eagerly awaited of the three.
The excitement was mainly because James Mangold – known for directing great films like 3:10 to Yuma, Logan, A Complete Unknown, and Ford v Ferrari – was going to write and direct. The movie was planned as a story about how the Jedi Order began and how they first learned to use the Force.
Taking place 25,000 years before Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, this new film sounds very promising. If made, it will feature a completely fresh cast, a different part of the Star Wars galaxy to discover, and a unique feel, moving away from stories focused on the Jedi in other time periods. If it does well, Dawn of the Jedi could potentially start a whole new series of films.
Adding to the already impressive team, Beau Willimon, the writer behind the critically acclaimed Andor – widely considered the best Star Wars TV show and responsible for some of its strongest episodes and writing – joined Mangold to work on the script. This collaboration makes Dawn of the Jedi the most anticipated Star Wars film by far.
