Donna Langley, head of NBCUniversal Entertainment, details the risk the company took with Christopher Nolan’s new film – and how it’s already proving successful. The highly anticipated historical movie is set to release this summer.
Langley explained that fast-tracking The Odyssey into production after receiving the script was a calculated risk. According to Langley, Christopher Nolan prefers to move quickly, starting preparation and then filming in a short timeframe. He values efficiency and likes to keep things moving.
Langley acknowledged that large-scale films always involve some risk, but said this project was an easy decision. He highly praised director Christopher Nolan, calling his work ‘pure cinema.’ Although the movie has a significant $250 million budget, there’s strong interest in it. This film, The Odyssey, is Nolan’s second collaboration with Universal Pictures following Oppenheimer, and the studio is keen to show Nolan how much they value his work.
Releasing the film this way was a risk, but we’re confident there’s a large and enthusiastic audience eager to experience Christopher Nolan’s work in this format.
We hoped announcing the event a year ahead of time and making it feel exclusive would generate excitement, and we were really pleased with how it turned out. It was a successful strategy, Langley explained. She suggested they might use a similar approach for other Universal projects, but only if those projects had the same strong potential as The Odyssey.
Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, The Odyssey, filmed in Greece, Italy, Morocco, Iceland, and Scotland, is expected to be a major cinematic event in 2026 and a likely box office hit. When NBCUniversal began offering advance tickets for a few IMAX 70mm showings, most of them sold out almost instantly.
Matt Damon, the Academy Award-winning actor from Massachusetts, will play Odysseus in the upcoming film The Odyssey. He’ll be joined by a fantastic cast including Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Charlize Theron as Circe, and Zendaya as Athena. Himesh Patel, Jimmy Gonzales, Will Yun Lee, Mia Goth, John Leguizamo, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, and Lupita Nyong’o round out the main cast.

People have been eagerly awaiting this movie for almost a year, and with good reason. Beyond what’s been shown in the trailer, the main actors have hinted at an incredible story and spectacular scenes.

Just a month after filming wrapped, Matt Damon described his time on set as the best experience of his career. He also believes the movie, The Odyssey, will be incredibly entertaining and feel like a grand myth when it’s released in theaters.
The Odyssey is currently slated to arrive in theaters on July 17.
