Why Wuthering Heights Director Likely Won’t Direct Wonder Woman for DCU

Emerald Fennell, the director of Wuthering Heights, has discussed the possibility of directing a Wonder Woman film within James Gunn’s new DC Universe. She was previously working on a script for a Zatanna movie in the older DC Extended Universe, but that project was canceled before it could be made.

Emerald Fennell on whether she will ever consider directing DCU’s Wonder Woman movie

Emerald Fennell, while appearing on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast to discuss her work on Wuthering Heights, was asked by host Josh Horowitz what her reaction would be if James Gunn offered her the chance to direct a Wonder Woman movie.

She said that sounded great, but explained she prefers to focus on one project at a time. Because of this, she wouldn’t be able to direct someone else’s film right now.

She explained that escaping into her imagination is essential for her well-being, saying it’s the only way she feels truly grounded. She believes these imaginary worlds are where she’s best able to be creative and productive.

James Gunn recently gave an update on the upcoming Wonder Woman movie for the DC Universe. He told Entertainment Weekly that the script is currently being written. He also confirmed this film is a distinct project from the previously announced HBO Max series, ‘Paradise Lost,’ which is still in early development.

A month later, Gunn discussed the movie’s progress in an interview with Urbana Play 104.3 FM. He explained that filming would begin as soon as the script was finished. While the script was still being written, he added that he’d start production right away if he loved it. Gunn emphasized that he wouldn’t begin filming unless the script was truly excellent, because the character deserved a great story.

Ana Nogueira, known for her work on Supergirl and currently writing a Teen Titans movie, is reportedly going to write the script.
