As you improve your character and equipment in No Rest for the Wicked, you’ll need to collect items like Stag Skulls to make your gear more powerful. Upgrading your gear will help you fight the enemies and challenges you face.
Some upgrade materials can be tricky to find. For example, you might spend time searching for bears to obtain items like Bear Paws and Bear Hearts.
This guide will show you where to find bears in No Rest for the Wicked, and how to get the items you need to upgrade your gear.
Search the Lowland Meadows

You won’t need Bear Paws or Bear Hearts until you’ve upgraded your equipment. So, you can likely wait until later in the game to start collecting them.
So, as you get about halfway through the game, you’ll end up needing to head to the Lowland Meadows. It’s south of Sacrament on the map, and that’s where you’ll face off against the Lost Huntress – a pretty tough boss, by the way!
You might sometimes see bears roaming the forest nearby. But there’s one place you can always find them: after you beat the Lost Huntress boss. Just a heads-up, she’s a difficult fight, so make sure you’re prepared with some good enchanted equipment.
Once you’ve beaten the Lost Huntress, go back to where you fought her at night. You’ll usually see two bears relaxing in that area.
You can obtain upgrade materials by defeating bears, including any others nearby.
Trade With the Merchants at Marin Village
Once you’ve made your way through Marin Woods, you’ll reach a small village. Here, you can find two traders who sell items used to upgrade your gear, which they get from bears. However, you’ll need to unlock them first.
You can unlock these merchants by finishing the story in this location. This means defeating the Caretaker and the Tusk boss. After you do that, go back to the village, and you’ll be able to access both shops.
The two vendors you’ll find bear materials from are Cyriel and Irmgard. Cyriel usually has materials for sale, though they can be quite expensive. Irmgard also typically carries at least one bear material, but you’ll need to trade her other items to get it.
Friends can also purchase items from these merchants if they are in your realm.
Search Marin Woods
Keep an eye out for bears while you explore Marin Woods – they’re often seen there! Just like in the Lowland Meadows, there’s a specific spot in Marin Woods where a bear is guaranteed to appear.
Okay, so I headed out from Marin Village Whisper, crossed that bridge, and went into the cave. I kept going down, down, down until I hit the bottom where there’s a bunch of water pools. And yep, there were a couple of bears just hanging out, waiting for me!
You’ll likely visit this area while completing the main story. Pay attention to where you find the bears, because they reappear, making it easy to collect materials from them repeatedly.
As a bonus, there are chests in the area as well that might drop Embers or Research Papers for you.
