Jeremy Allen White’s ‘The Iron Claw’ Scores Netflix Streaming Date

Jeremy Allen White has been steadily working as an actor for years, notably appearing in all ten seasons of Shameless. However, his performance in FX’s The Bear really boosted his career, earning him widespread recognition and awards, including Golden Globe and Emmy wins for his portrayal of Carmine Berzatto. This success led to more prominent film roles, like his recent work in The Iron Claw, where he depicted the difficult and tragic story of the Von Erich wrestling family. The film will be available on Netflix starting February 19th.

I was completely blown away by Jeremy Allen White in The Iron Claw, just like I was with The Bear. He truly embodied Kerry Von Erich, and the whole cast – alongside Zac Efron, Harris Dickinson, Stanley Simons, and Holt McCallany – was phenomenal. The film tells the heartbreaking story of the Von Erich family, starting in the late 70s and early 80s, with their father, Fritz, pushing his sons into professional wrestling, even if it wasn’t what they wanted or they weren’t naturally suited for. It’s a devastating look at their pursuit of fame, marked by a series of terrible tragedies, until ultimately, only one of the four brothers is left. It’s a really powerful and moving film.

Critics Raved but Awards Groups Ignored

Critics and audiences alike have praised The Iron Claw, a moving and authentic story about a family’s struggles. The film currently holds an 89% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with viewers giving it an even higher score of 94%. Written and directed by Sean Durkin, the movie has appeared on many critics’ ‘best of the year’ lists, and the performances and filmmaking have received widespread recognition.

Sports movies have a long history of earning awards recognition, with films like Rocky, Raging Bull, Million Dollar Baby, The Blind Side, and Moneyball all receiving nominations. While The Iron Claw was praised by some groups – the National Board of Review even named it Best Ensemble – it didn’t receive any nominations from the Golden Globes or the Academy Awards. Facing strong competition from films like Oppenheimer and Poor Things likely hurt its chances, and it’s possible the movie would have fared better in a different year.

Another Biopic Came Up Short

The National Board of Review praised The Iron Claw for its fantastic ensemble cast, noting that the film’s strength lay in the relationships between all the Von Erich family members. In 2025, the director will have another opportunity to portray a real person on screen, someone whose impact and story are legendary.

In the documentary Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere, actor Zach White portrays Bruce Springsteen at a turning point in his life. Despite the success of his album The River and its tour, Springsteen was struggling with how fame was affecting him and whether it was making his personal problems worse. To reconnect with himself, he retreated to a secluded house to write new music, ultimately creating the album Nebraska, which was a significant change in style for the artist.
