As a researcher with a background in compliance and regulatory affairs, I find the news about Artur Schaback’s guilty plea to be both concerning and disappointing. The allegations against him are serious, and they highlight the importance of robust Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Know Your Customer (KYC) programs in the cryptocurrency industry.

Artur Schaback, a co-founder and former CTO of Paxful, admitted to his involvement in a deliberate attempt not to create, advance, adhere to, or maintain a satisfactory Anti-Money Laundering (AML) program in accordance with the Bank Secrecy Act.

From July 2015 to June 2019, Schaback neglected to gather essential Know Your Customer (KYC) data from clients who created accounts on Paxful for trading purposes, according to the US Department of Justice’s Office of Public Affairs.

DOJ: Schaback Allowed Paxful for Money Laundering, Fraud

The ex-executive is allegedly deceiving others by portraying Paxful as a service without Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements, concealing ineffective Anti-Money Laundering (AML) policies, and neglecting to submit any reports on suspected illicit activities.

By failing to establish Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Know Your Customer (KYC) measures, the DOJ asserted that the 36-year-old Estonian resident enabled Paxful to serve as a conduit for money laundering, sanctions breaches, and other illicit activities such as fraud, romance scams, extortion plots, and prostitution.

Schaback admitted to conspiring to deliberately neglect creating, improving, enforcing, and updating an adequate Anti-Money Laundering (AML) program in accordance with the Bank Secrecy Act.

As a crypto investor, I’m closely following the developments in the case of Schaback. His sentencing is set for November 4th, and he faces a potential maximum penalty of five years in prison. The decision will be made by a federal district court judge, taking into account the US Sentencing Guidelines and other relevant statutory elements. In the meantime, Schaback has announced his intention to resign from Paxful Inc.’s Board of Directors.
