A recently discovered Sony patent suggests that PlayStation is exploring a controller with a completely touchscreen interface – meaning no buttons at all.
Patents are constantly being filed, but most don’t actually become products you can buy. Still, they give us a unique look at what the leading gaming hardware companies are developing privately.
Sony has been experimenting with a lot of interesting ideas, like AI that censors content, programs that can play games for you as if a ‘ghost’ is controlling them, and tools to help developers create games faster. While none of these are currently available, they offer a glimpse into what PlayStation might become in the future.
A new Sony patent, first noticed by VGC, details a controller design that could be the next step after the DualSense. This controller would ditch traditional buttons in favor of a full touchscreen interface.
New PlayStation controller patent replaces buttons with touch screens.
This patent was originally filed in February 2023, but wasn’t revealed until early 2026. It details a controller featuring a large touchscreen and no buttons, offering users an unprecedented level of personalization.
Current designs sometimes have a disadvantage: they aren’t adjustable. A fixed size might be too small or too big for some people, and it could also be uncomfortable to use.
To avoid potential problems, this device gives users full control – no pun intended! They can customize the touchscreen by arranging and resizing buttons to their liking.
You can customize the device to perfectly suit your preferences. For example, you can move the D-Pad to the right side if that feels more comfortable. You can even remove buttons you don’t need – like the Triangle button in a racing game – and make the remaining buttons larger. Essentially, there are endless possibilities to adjust the device to your liking.
The patent details how pressure and heat sensors are used to ensure accurate touch detection. This prevents accidental actions from happening when your finger lightly brushes the screen.
This patent describes a game controller that can recognize individual users and automatically switch to their preferred settings. This eliminates the need to reconfigure buttons each time a different person uses the same controller. The patent also points out a need for controllers to adapt to different players and hand sizes without requiring custom controller sizes.
There’s no certainty this concept will actually become a real product you can buy in stores. It might just stay as an idea.
Lots of concepts never become reality, but this new controller design might be the future of the PlayStation 6. It’s still uncertain, but a recently filed patent suggests it’s a real possibility. Only time will tell if it comes to fruition.
