Fantasy entertainment today largely focuses on mythical creatures and magic, with dragons being particularly popular. While Game of Thrones is currently well-known for its depiction of dragons, Rebecca Yarros’ Empyrean Series could become the new leading example when it comes to adapting dragon stories for the screen.
The popular fantasy series, Empyrean, started with the novel Fourth Wing. It now includes the sequels Iron Flame and Onyx Storm, with two more books planned. In 2023, Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society Productions announced they would be turning Fourth Wing into a TV series for Prime Video. Violet has always prepared to be a scribe, but now, despite being small and easily injured, she must overcome incredible challenges to prove she can become a dragon rider.
It’s been a few years since the show was announced, but people who love the books are still really excited about it. The story has many popular fantasy elements, like political conflict, war, and special magical powers. A lot of fans are especially drawn to the romantic relationship between characters who start as enemies, as it plays a big role in the story.

While House of the Dragon does give dragons some intelligence and personality, they mostly function as weapons that ultimately contributed to the Targaryen family’s downfall. In contrast, the dragons in Fourth Wing have more free will and actively choose to cooperate with humans, even during times of war.
While many stories focus on the power of dragons, Fourth Wing goes further by deeply developing their unique personalities and history. These magical creatures have their own complex society, with a strict hierarchy that matters more to them than their relationships with humans. The dragons also have established names and connections before choosing a rider, giving them individual lives and making their own choices.
Fans of the book series are really looking forward to this, and viewers who enjoy fantasy TV should be excited too. The show has a rich history of dragons, and its world-building and storyline offer a captivating fantasy experience that hits all the right notes for modern audiences.
