Similar to its sequel, Kingdom Come: Deliverance takes place in the Kingdom of Bohemia in the early 1400s. While the developers at Warhorse Studios considered other settings, they ultimately chose this one because it was the most practical.
Both Medieval Germany and the time period depicted in the Robin Hood legends (roughly the 15th century) would have made compelling settings for a game, particularly a detailed action-RPG focused on historical accuracy. However, the team at Warhorse Studios ultimately decided that changing the game’s location wouldn’t live up to their own high expectations for the project.
According to Warhorse Studios’ design director, Viktor Bocan, the key to the game’s design is creating a strong sense of presence – making players truly feel like they’re in the game world. He explained to Edge magazine that the game’s systems should allow players to interact with the world in any way they choose, and the world should realistically respond to those actions.
He explains that the historical details aren’t just for recreating the past; they’re included to make the story feel real. He uses the word ‘verisimilitude’ to describe the goal of making everything as accurate and believable as possible.
To achieve the level of historical accuracy Bocan and his team are aiming for, a lot of detailed research is required. They employ an in-house historian, Joanna Nowak, who investigates various local resources – like church records and university archives – to create a vivid and accurate picture of life in past centuries. Being based in Prague, in the Czech Republic – which grew out of the historical Kingdom of Bohemia – has also been a significant advantage for their research.
Starting a project in England or Germany would have meant beginning from scratch, since Warhorse had no existing knowledge or connections there, according to Bocan. Instead, the studio opted to focus on areas where they had a solid base, and that turned out to be a successful choice for everyone.
