A recent rewatch of Stephen King’s overlooked show from last year shows it’s a fantastic continuation of his lesser-known film starring Timothy Olyphant.
With so many Stephen King stories adapted for the screen, it’s hard to know which ones are hidden gems worth revisiting. But a few consistently stand out as being overlooked, despite not getting much attention when they were first released. One such adaptation features Timothy Olyphant in a leading role.
The film still holds up surprisingly well and shares a lot of similarities with one of Stephen King’s latest popular TV series.
The Institute Feels Like The Perfect Follow-up To Timothy Olyphant’s Underrated Dreamcatcher Movie
Stephen King’s The Institute (2025) and Dreamcatcher (2003), both featuring Timothy Olyphant, appear quite different on the surface. The Institute focuses on children with special powers who are abducted, while Dreamcatcher is an alien invasion story centered on the bonds of friendship and gruesome body horror. But if you look closely, the two stories actually share more common ground than you might think.
What struck me in both of Stephen King’s stories is this unsettling idea of a shadowy government group pulling the strings. They operate in secret, and what’s really disturbing is how easily they rationalize horrific acts by claiming it’s all for national security or what they believe is the greater good. It’s a chilling concept, honestly.
In Stephen King’s Dreamcatcher, people with special abilities are seen as tools to be used and discarded in the fight against aliens. But in The Institute, those with similar gifts are held captive and subjected to cruel experiments, all in an attempt to avert potential disasters.
As a longtime Stephen King fan, I couldn’t help but notice some fascinating connections between The Institute and Dreamcatcher and his Dark Tower series. The Institute’s central facility felt very much like a corporate, streamlined version of the terrifying Devar-Toi from The Dark Tower, where those with special abilities were imprisoned. And the characters in Dreamcatcher? They clearly have a heightened version of ‘the shine,’ that psychic ability so central to The Dark Tower. It made me see them as evolved versions of the Breakers from The Dark Tower or, interestingly, the TKs and TPs we see in The Institute. King definitely seems to be building a shared universe, and it’s a thrill to see these subtle, yet significant, links emerge.
Dreamcatcher Also Has A Hidden Pennywise Connection
As a big Stephen King fan, I’ve noticed some interesting connections between his books. While The Institute feels linked to the IT universe, it’s a more understated connection. Like IT, it really hits home that the scariest monsters aren’t supernatural – they’re the adults who ignore or even contribute to the harm of kids. Dreamcatcher, though, is much more direct – it actually shows a reference to Pennywise with some graffiti!
“Pennywise Lives.”
The mention of ‘IT’ in Stephen King’s Dreamcatcher has sparked theories that the alien in that novel is actually Pennywise. Whether or not these connections are intentional, they demonstrate that King’s stories are linked by common themes of fear and anxiety, creating a shared universe of horror.
These movies also offer a great chance to rediscover older Stephen King adaptations, like Dreamcatcher starring Timothy Olyphant. Films that might not have been appreciated at first can often seem much better when you revisit them later.
