Yangwang’s new hypercar is now the fastest production car ever made, breaking speed records previously held by both gasoline and hybrid vehicles.
The U9 Xtreme, an upgraded version of the company’s electric hypercar, reached a confirmed top speed of 308.4 mph during testing at the ATP Papenburg track in Germany.
Okay, so I just heard about this – Marc Basseng was driving when they absolutely smashed the speed record! Bugatti had held it for a while – back in 2019, they hit 304.8 mph with the Chiron Super Sport 300+, but this new run blew past that. It’s seriously impressive!
The fastest production car ever
The U9 Xtreme, created by BYD’s high-end brand, boasts nearly 3,000 horsepower thanks to its four-motor electric system. While the standard U9 is available in China, this Xtreme version was engineered for maximum speed and has been rigorously tested on closed courses.
Yangwang has verified that the vehicle was a standard production model. With only 30 units being made globally, this makes it an incredibly exclusive vehicle and currently the quickest electric vehicle you can legally drive on public roads.
I managed to get a video of my run, and it was officially verified at the test center. That put the U9 Xtreme right at the top of the leaderboard for production cars – pretty awesome!
History shows us that records don’t last forever. Bugatti is planning to release the Tourbillon in 2026 as a replacement for the Chiron, with an impressive 1,800 horsepower. However, the U9 Xtreme currently has a much higher output of 3,000 horsepower, meaning it may be a while before a commercially available car can surpass it.
