Chris Pine recently shared his honest thoughts about returning to the Star Trek universe. At the Sundance Film Festival, he discussed the possibility of playing Captain James T. Kirk again. A new Star Trek movie has been in the works for ten years, and recent changes in leadership at Paramount might be the reason for a renewed look at the project.
Pine jokingly suggested he’s less informed than most about what’s happening with Star Trek, hinting that Paramount Skydance hasn’t contacted him about future plans – at least not yet. He and the studio previously collaborated on the film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
There’s still no news about whether Josh Goldstein and Kyle Daily will return, or about the progress of Star Trek 4. When asked for advice for Paramount’s new leaders on finally making the movie, Chris Pine jokingly said, “Have fun, good luck, and live long and prosper.”
Chris Pine first played Captain Kirk in the 2009 Star Trek movie, which rebooted the franchise. He reprised the role in Star Trek Into Darkness (2011) and Star Trek Beyond (2016), alongside the original cast. Plans for a fourth Star Trek film were announced before Beyond was released, intending to reunite the crew, but disagreements over salaries ultimately caused the project to be cancelled.
Chris Pine Remains Uncertain About His Star Trek Future
It’s been ten years since the last Star Trek movie appeared in theaters (Star Trek Beyond was released during the franchise’s 50th anniversary, and it’s now celebrating its 60th). The new leadership team is prioritizing a revival of Star Trek films. According to a report by Goldstein and Daley, a decision has been made to move forward with the franchise, with plans for a fresh and innovative approach to the Star Trek universe.
Matt Shakman, who directed The Fantastic Four: First Steps, was originally going to direct Star Trek 4. However, he left that project to go back to working with Marvel Studios last year.
According to Shakman, they had made significant progress with sets and a full crew. But by the summer of 2022, the film underwent a major overhaul. Everything they’d established was dismantled, and the production was effectively stalled with no clear timeline to begin filming.
Shakman isn’t alone in nearly completing a Star Trek 4 only to have the project cancelled. A previous idea, Alien: Earth, which would have introduced a new crew, also faced cancellation by Paramount.
J.J. Abrams, the director of Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, once announced plans for a fourth Star Trek movie featuring the original cast, but the project never moved forward.
