As a researcher with a background in financial fraud and white-collar crime, I find the case of Ruja Ignatova, also known as CryptoQueen, to be one of the most intriguing and complex investigations I’ve come across. The magnitude of the OneCoin scam, which is estimated to have defrauded investors out of $4 billion, is truly astounding.
Ignota Ruja, a Bulgarian native with the pseudonym CryptoQueen and the infamous founder of the $4 billion OneCoin scam, remains elusive. Her status is uncertain as some question whether she is still alive or in hiding. However, the FBI has increased the reward to $5 million for any credible information that could lead to her capture.
On October 12, 2017, I learned that the US District Court in the Southern District of New York had charged Ruja Ignatova with orchestrating the OneCoin Ponzi scheme. A warrant was issued for her arrest at that time. Then, on February 6, 2018, a superseding indictment was filed against Ignatova, accusing her of one count each of Conspiring to Commit Wire Fraud, Wire Fraud, Conspiring to Commit Money Laundering, and Securities Fraud.
In the OneCoin scam, the company amassed funds from gullible investors under the pretext of lucrative returns and educational packages. However, this was a pyramid scheme in disguise, where existing investors were tasked with recruiting new ones and transferring their investments to the newest members. Contrary to its claims, OneCoin’s cryptocurrency did not operate on a decentralized blockchain network.
After being convicted in the United States, she journeyed to Athens, Greece, on October 25, 2017, having come from Bulgaria. Fearing extradition, she went into hiding. There is speculation that she underwent plastic surgery and other cosmetic treatments to alter her appearance and avoid detection. Additionally, she was in possession of a German passport, which could have facilitated her departure from Greece.
As a crypto investor following news closely, I’ve learned that despite evading capture so far, the Bulgarian authorities have decided to press charges against her in my absence. In an official communique, Borislav Sarafov, Bulgaria’s Acting Prosecutor General, and Kenneth Merten, US Ambassador to Bulgaria, made this announcement.
As a analyst, I’d rephrase it this way: I’ve uncovered some troubling information regarding OneCoin’s leadership. The co-founder, as well as the legal head, both held significant roles in the company’s operations. Shockingly, they were previously apprehended and sentenced for their involvement with OneCoin. Additionally, Ruja’s boyfriend and brother also fall under this category, having been implicated and punished for their part in the organization.
