The Pitt fans have a wild idea for Season 3

“The Pitt” has been a major TV success over the past year, and viewers are already sharing their hopes for Season 3, even though we’re only at the beginning of Season 2.

The Pitt is a medical drama series centered around the bustling Pittsburgh Trauma Center, where doctors treat patients and train future medical professionals.

Okay, so the really cool thing about this game is each season feels like a single, intense 15-hour shift at the hospital. It’s not sped up or anything – things happen pretty much as they would in real time, which makes it super immersive.

The show’s first season premiered on HBO in January 2025 and was quickly praised by both critics and audiences. The second season, which picks up the story ten months later, is currently airing and is also receiving rave reviews. However, people are already starting to discuss what’s in store for Season 3.

The Pitt fans want a ‘night shift’ season

The first two seasons of The Pitt took place entirely during the day. Both seasons started at 7am and continued until 10pm.

People who’ve been in hospitals know things get hectic during the day, but nighttime is often even more chaotic. That’s the kind of drama viewers are drawn to.

A Reddit user wondered if a spinoff show focusing on the nighttime staff was possible. They thought it would be interesting to see stories about patients who come in late at night – people from clubs, concerts, or parties – and suggested New Year’s Eve as a particularly good setting for an episode.

One viewer suggested focusing a potential third season entirely on the night shift workers, rather than creating a spin-off. They believe the show’s existing format would work well, with appearances from the main characters at the beginning and end of each episode, and the rest of the season dedicated to the stories of those working the night shift.

Another viewer suggested they weren’t keen on a separate show, but thought it would be interesting to have a season that began during the night shift. They also felt this could offer a fresh take on the show’s real-time format, avoiding the typical 7am start.

The Pitt meets 24

Another idea being discussed involves a 24-episode season set entirely within The Pitt, covering a single 24-hour period.

One Reddit user suggested a unique season format: 24 episodes following a full day, starting and ending at 7am. The idea is to show events unfolding with a ‘day shift’ followed by a ‘night shift,’ creating a 24-hour narrative.

Someone else chimed in, saying it sounded like a really enjoyable concept, and suggested exploring interesting story possibilities during a shift change. They proposed October 31st as a potential airdate, envisioning a 24-episode Halloween-themed season. They noted that Halloween often involves chaotic events, from alcohol-related incidents to worries about tampered candy.

What we know about Season 3

HBO announced that a third season of ‘The Pitt’ is planned, revealing the news at the premiere of Season 2 in Los Angeles. However, they haven’t shared many specifics about the upcoming season yet.

R. Scott Gemmil, the showrunner, had hinted at a Halloween-themed season, but Noah Wyle, one of the stars, suggested it was just a playful idea. Wyle told Variety that Gemmil was eager to wear a Krampus costume on set.

So, everyone was wondering if Season 3 would drop on a holiday like Season 2 did on July 4th. I heard Wyle say it probably won’t, but he hinted they might not make us wait quite as long this time. Ten months between seasons was a really long wait, and they don’t think they need to do that again, which is awesome!

The show is expected to premiere early next year. HBO’s chairman and CEO, Casey Bloys, emphasized to Deadline the importance of releasing it every year.

Our industry has drifted away from consistent, scheduled content, and I’m hoping ‘The Pitt’ – which originally aired in January 2025 and returns in January 2026 – will bring that back. Having content people look forward to not just weekly, but yearly, is key to building a loyal audience.
