The show will cover the team’s history – from its beginnings to its successes and famous rivalries. If the series is greenlit, Manchester United could receive a significant financial payout, which is causing frustration among Arsenal fans.
Manchester United began in 1878 as the football club for employees of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway’s Newton Heath depot. The team became Manchester United in 1902 and truly gained prominence in the 1950s under manager Matt Busby, eventually becoming one of the world’s most popular sports teams. A new show will cover key moments in the club’s history, including the tragic 1958 Munich air disaster (where a plane crash killed half of those on board), their 1968 European Cup victory, and the beginning of their dominance in the Premier League. According to The Athletic, Jed Mercurio, creator of Line of Duty, is being considered to lead the project. It remains to be seen if this show will resonate with American audiences, or if Americans still prefer to learn about football through personalities like Ryan Reynolds or Jason Sudeikis.
