Jason Statham‘s new thriller, Shelter, delivers the exciting action and emotional depth his fans have come to expect. Director Ric Roman Waugh, known for balancing action and heart in films like the Greenland sequel starring Gerard Butler, helms the project. The screenplay is by Ward Perry, who also wrote Liam Neeson’s 2023 film, Retribution.
Jason Statham’s next movie, coming in 2026, features him as Michael Mason, a skilled assassin living in hiding. He unexpectedly forms a bond with a young girl and finds himself having to shield her from dangerous enemies. The film, titled Shelter, also stars Bill Nighy, Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, and Bodhi Rae Breathnach. It’s produced by Black Bear Pictures, the company behind films like Sydney Sweeney’s Christy and the critically acclaimed Train Dreams, which is hoping for Oscar recognition.
ScreenRant is excited to share a sneak peek clip from the movie Shelter. The clip shows Waugh explaining why Michael went into hiding after working as a top agent. He describes the relationship between Mason and Jesse (Breathnach) as a “safe harbor,” highlighting Mason’s kind nature despite his tough exterior.
What really struck me about the interview was how the director talked about Jason Statham. He said Statham actually lives the way his characters do, and it’s not about the action – the explosions and chases. It’s about the values his characters have – things like a strong moral compass, being honest, and just being genuine. That’s what really connects with audiences, and I think that’s a huge reason why his movies are so successful.
Evelyn Waugh often creates interesting contrasts between characters and their situations, like in Greenland 2: Migration, where the genuinely good nature of Jason Butler and his family is tested by the harsh, uncaring world after the apocalypse. Audiences will also be able to see Jason Statham in Mutiny next August, and a sequel to The Beekeeper is planned, though it doesn’t have a release date yet.
