When pre-orders opened for Bungie’s new game, Marathon, some players accidentally received a download of Destiny 2 as well. This was an unexpected issue that Bungie quickly addressed.
Bungie announced on X (formerly Twitter) on January 20th that their free-to-play looter shooter game was unexpectedly downloading onto the computers of players who had pre-ordered their new game, Marathon.
Bungie hasn’t said exactly what caused players to receive the unexpected package, but they’ve confirmed the problem has been fixed.
We fixed a problem that caused Destiny 2 to start downloading unexpectedly after players pre-ordered the Marathon expansion on Steam. We also resolved an error that prevented owners of the Collector’s Edition from activating their game code on Steam.

Destiny 2 issue also resolved
Bungie announced it has separated Marathon from Destiny 2 on Steam and fixed a problem that prevented players who purchased a special Marathon-themed cosmetic bundle from receiving it.
You can now claim a new pack containing an Exotic Ghost Shell, Ship, and Sparrow. Just visit the Special Deliveries Kiosk in the Tower to get them.

After a shaky announcement and concerns about copied artwork from early testers, Bungie postponed the release of Marathon, originally planned for September 2025.
Feedback improved significantly after a new look at the game in late 2025, showcasing better graphics and gameplay.
Ever since pre-orders opened, everyone’s gotten really hyped about this game! It shot up the Steam charts, actually hitting number five at one point. That put it above Warframe and just below Marvel Rivals, which is pretty awesome to see.
