Be warned: this contains spoilers for Stranger Things Season 5! You can watch the series on Netflix if you have a subscription.
Now that Stranger Things has finished its five-season run, fans are still talking about a lot of unanswered questions. What ultimately happened with Eleven? How did Max manage to graduate despite being in a coma for almost two years? And why was Linda Hamilton’s character not developed well? Many are also wondering if Rockin’ Robin and Vickie ended up together. The creators, the Duffer Brothers, have shared their perspective on that last question, and I have some thoughts of my own.
Vickie, played by Amybeth McNulty, first appeared in Season 4 as a bandmate of Robin (Maya Hawke), who developed a crush on her. Their relationship blossomed into a secret romance by Season 5, and Vickie even helped fight against Vecna. Now, viewers are wondering if this intense experience strengthened their bond or created distance between them. Ross Duffer recently shared insights with Entertainment Weekly about this.
In Mike’s storyline, we jump ahead in time to a specific moment, but we want to leave the characters’ final outcomes open-ended for the audience to speculate about. Will Robin and Vickie remain a couple? It’s uncertain.
Similar to the ambiguous ending for Eleven, the creators of the show, Ross and Matt Duffer, are leaving it up to fans to decide whether a certain couple stays together. They have considered the characters’ futures, but as Ross Duffer pointed out, they’ve also included a few clues for viewers to interpret.
In the final scene, Vickie wasn’t with Robin at graduation and wasn’t mentioned at all, leading some viewers to believe they’ve broken up. This idea gained more traction when Robin discussed dealing with controlling partners with Steve, Nancy, and Jonathan, though it’s not certain if she was talking about her own relationship or Steve’s.
Matt Duffer offered his own slightly more-decisive take, saying:
From what I’ve seen, and from what my high school friends have experienced, almost no couples stay together once they go off to college. Max and Lucas are a rare exception – their connection seems truly strong. But, of course, you can never predict what will happen with anyone.
He’s still not giving a clear answer, but he does raise a good point. We’ve seen relationships end – like Nancy and Jonathan – but others, such as Max and Lucas, have stayed strong, and Joyce and Hopper even got engaged. These story choices feel logical to me, which is why I think breaking up Robin and Vickie would be the best direction for the show.
Both young women are still figuring out who they are, which is natural at their age. It makes sense that, even though they shared a strong connection as teenagers, they would grow and change as they go to college, move away from Hawkins, and meet new people. As Matt Duffer explained, most high school relationships don’t last through such big life changes.
As a film and TV fan, one thing that really bothers me is when stories jump into the future and the characters haven’t grown. I mean, I’ve spent hours with these people, and it feels so unsatisfying if they’re still stuck in the same patterns, haven’t made any new connections, or tried anything new. I want to see them live full, vibrant lives, not just exist within the confines of the original story!
It’s just my take, but the Duffer brothers seem happy to leave the fate of Robin and Vickie open to interpretation, allowing fans to decide for themselves what happened.
