Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Comics Confirmed For Spring 2026 Release

The newest installment in the Star Trek universe, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, just launched on Paramount+ in January 2026. Surprisingly, a comic book series based on the show is already in development.

This spring, IDW Entertainment will launch the first issue of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy – Lost Contact, a brand new story set in the exciting world of Star Trek.

According to an exclusive synopsis from Nerdist, the comic book features characters readers will recognize – Caleb Mir (also known as Sanro Rosta), Genesis Lythe (Bella Shepard), Jay-Den Kraag (Karim Diané), and Tarima Sadal (Zoë Steiner). The story begins with a seemingly straightforward mission for this team of young space explorers on a desolate planet. However, a sudden storm disrupts their communication with their instructors on the Athena, leaving them to depend on their training and teamwork to make it through.

Layne Morgan is the writer behind Star Trek: Starfleet Academy – Lost Contact. While she’s currently known for her work with The CW, this isn’t her first comic book project – she also has a young adult sports story called Run coming out soon. According to an interview with Nerdist, she’s a long-time fan of the Star Trek universe.

Working within the Star Trek universe has been a real privilege, and that’s been the most rewarding part of this project. As someone new to such a large and established franchise, it’s been incredible to explore a world with so much history, dedicated fans, and compelling stories. I especially enjoyed developing the Starfleet Academy cadets, discovering new facets of their personalities and finding the perfect story to showcase them. I aimed to create a challenge for them that felt like a nod to classic television, hoping longtime Trek fans would appreciate that connection. It’s easy to say these things, but honestly, reading the scripts for Starfleet Academy genuinely excited me. It’s the kind of world I love writing in, and the story, ‘LOST CONTACT,’ flowed naturally from that. I’m really eager for others to experience that same excitement and to connect with these cadets as much as I have.

The comic’s art is by Coralí Espuna, a Spanish illustrator who recently adapted the musical Mar i Cel into a graphic novel, and Nora Serrano, a visual effects artist with experience in 3D animation. Serrano’s work includes the films It: Chapter Two and Wonder Woman 1984.

Cassandra Jones, the editor of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy — Lost Contact, highly praises the comic’s creator, noting Morgan’s talent for writing compelling and intricate relationship-driven stories. She also commended the artistic collaboration of Espuna and Serrano, describing their work as beautiful and original.

The TV series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, created by Gaia Violo, centers on the lives of young cadets training to join Starfleet. They deal with everyday teenage issues while also learning the mysteries of space travel. The show features Academy Award winner Holly Hunter as Captain Nahla Ake, and Stephen Colbert, host of The Late Show, plays the role of Starfleet Academy’s Digital Dean of Students.

Star Trek Has A Long Comic Book History

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy – Lost Contact is just one of several new releases planned for a significant moment in the history of Star Trek. 2026 will be the 60th anniversary of the original series, which revolutionized science fiction with its imaginative stories of space exploration.

The comic book history of Star Trek is nearly as long-standing. Gold Key Comics began publishing Star Trek comics in 1967, and by 1969, they were the only place fans could find continuing adventures with the crew of the USS Enterprise.

For ten years, the rights to the franchise changed hands several times, even including DC Comics, before IDW Entertainment became its publisher in 2006, focusing on illustrated stories. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy – Lost Contact is the newest comic book released alongside a TV show, following other projects like the Star Trek: Lower Decks spin-off.

IDW recently released a comic book titled Star Trek: The Last Starship. It’s set after the devastating event called “The Burn,” which was shown in Season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery. The story follows the remaining members of Starfleet as they deal with the aftermath and features a mysterious character originally played by William Shatner.

Star Trek: Starfleet AcademyLost Contact #1 goes on sale on April 15.
