For many Hollywood stars, winning an Oscar is the ultimate goal. But Amanda Seyfried feels differently. Every year, there’s a lot of buzz about who will be nominated for an Academy Award and who might win. While Seyfried is again being talked about as a potential winner, her attitude toward the awards is surprisingly refreshing.
Amanda Seyfried, currently receiving praise – and a Golden Globe nomination – for her role in The Testament of Ann Lee, recently spoke with The New Yorker about the possibility of winning an Oscar. Surprisingly, the 40-year-old actress admitted that winning isn’t her main goal. She’s much more focused on the process of acting and the work itself.
It’s not about winning awards, it’s about being nominated. A nomination really helps your career. Do I need an award now? No, not at all. Would it be nice? Absolutely. But it’s not essential. A long-lasting career as an actor isn’t accidental; it’s built on making intentional choices to create meaningful work alongside more mainstream, profitable projects. And to me, everything I do is a form of art.
I was so impressed with Amanda Seyfried’s December! First, The Housemaid movie came out on the 19th and became a huge hit in theaters. Then, Ann Lee had a limited release, with plans for a wider release later in 2026. It’s amazing to me that she could handle such different roles, but she said she actually approached both performances from the same core place – it’s really interesting to hear how she works!
‘The Housemaid’ was a low-budget thriller that became a huge commercial success, and I approached every creative decision with the same care and artistry as I did with my independent film, ‘Ann Lee.’ It made me realize I want to balance both big-budget and smaller, independent projects for the rest of my career. I’ve reached this point in my career without an Oscar, and I don’t feel I need one now.
The actress, known for her role in Les Misérables, says winning an Oscar would definitely be a great honor, and she wouldn’t refuse one. However, she feels that simply being nominated is actually more important for her career than winning the award.

The Mank actress believes she’s already proven her abilities, easily shifting between different types of movies and working on both small independent films and large studio productions. She feels an Oscar isn’t necessary for her at this point, as Seyfried explained.
I’m confident in my abilities – people are trusting me with challenging projects. Like everyone, my career has its ups and downs, and public opinion can shift, but I remain true to my principles and priorities. Right now, I’m in a good position because my book, ‘The Housemaid,’ was successful. That’s not always guaranteed; sometimes you’re part of a huge hit like ‘Mamma Mia!’, and other times a project that’s expected to do well, like ‘Ted 2’ or ‘A Million Ways to Die in the West,’ doesn’t quite meet expectations.
Amanda Seyfried believes she’s proven her dedication and talent. After working consistently in film and TV for almost 25 years, including her role in the series Big Love (now on HBO Max), she’s demonstrated that a lasting career isn’t built on winning awards. Instead, it comes from making careful decisions and approaching every project with artistic commitment, no matter how big or small. Her viewpoint is refreshingly different in an industry so focused on Oscars and awards season, and she presents it in a way that’s very convincing.
If you’re interested in seeing philosophy come to life on screen, The Housemaid is still showing in cinemas. And for those wanting to see her critically acclaimed performance in The Testament of Ann Lee, it will be available across the country starting January 23, 2026, after a limited run.
