A man in Taiwan died from lead poisoning after consistently using the same thermos for three decades. He was in his 50s.

Everyone has a favorite cup – whether it’s for water, coffee, tea, or taking drinks on the go. Many people even keep a special mug at work so they can use it every day.

In Taiwan, a doctor named Hung Yung-hsiang reported that a man in his 50s died after using the same thermos mug for three decades.

Yung-hsiang explained that the driver had an accident, crashing his car into a store while commuting to work. Doctors found him confused, and he was hospitalized for testing and care from kidney specialists.

Doctor warns about using same cup for years

Doctors determined the man had dangerously low iron levels, brain tissue loss, and kidney problems. They traced the cause to severe lead poisoning, which was caused by rust forming inside his thermos.

Yung-hsiang noted the man had lost his sense of taste and was feeling very tired, both symptoms of the recently identified lead poisoning.

He advised people to replace their thermoses every few years to help prevent potential illnesses.

The doctor has been using Facebook to share cautionary tales from his practice. Recently, he posted about a patient, Mr. Li, who developed kidney failure from consistently drinking coffee made with old, stale beans.

Mr. Li explained to Dr. Hong in a post, “I just assumed warming up the coffee would be okay.” He then warned that it wasn’t about saving a few dollars, but risking long-term kidney damage.
