This year’s Sundance Film Festival is particularly poignant for Amy Redford, as it’s the first one without her father, Robert Redford, who helped start the festival back in 1978. As the festival prepares to begin in Utah on January 22nd, Amy fondly remembers her father, describing him as playful, curious, and kind. She shared on the TODAY show that he instilled in his children the importance of pursuing passions and finding ways to make a difference. She also credits him with giving her family a unique upbringing, split between the bustle of New York City and the natural beauty of the Sundance mountains, which taught them the value of responsibility and care for the environment.
Preparing for Sundance this year without Robert is difficult, but she’s heartened by how much his work continues to mean to independent filmmakers and the state of Utah. She believes his lasting impact is about supporting others and fostering a sense of belonging. ‘It feels like a family returning each year,’ she says.
