As a researcher with a background in human rights and international law, I am deeply concerned about the ongoing detention of Tigran Gambaryan in Kuje Prison in Nigeria. Based on my analysis of the available information, it appears that Mr. Gambaryan has been wrongfully detained on money laundering charges levied against Binance, which many believe were fabricated to extort money from the exchange.

US Congressmembers Rep. French Hill (R-Arkansas) and Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (D-Pennsylvania) paid a visit to Tigran Gambaryan during their trip to Nigeria for counterterrorism discussions. Gambaryan, who was taken into custody in Nigeria in February, is currently detained on allegations of money laundering linked to Binance. However, many believe these charges are fabricated with the intention of extracting funds from the exchange.

Four months ago, I was among two Binance executives, including Nadeem Anjarwalla, who were detained by Nigerian officials during our visit to resolve reported issues with the exchange. Although tax evasion charges were levied against me, I was later acquitted on 14 June by the courts. Unfortunately, Anjarwalla did not share my fate and managed to escape from prison and leave Nigeria.

In a recent video on X, Representative Hill spoke out about Tigran’s plight in prison. He urged the embassy to intervene due to the inhumane conditions, Tigran’s proven innocence, and his deteriorating health. The representative expressed concern over Tigran’s current state, sharing that he has both malaria and double pneumonia, and has lost a considerable amount of weight. Unfortunately, Tigran is also being denied proper medical care.

As a crypto investor, I’ve been following the news closely regarding Rep. Houlahan’s recent visit to Kuje Prison in Nigeria. While there, she mentioned the challenging circumstances I’d imagine Gambaryan was facing. She described it as “difficult conditions,” adding that he seemed “under a lot of stress.” It’s important to note that this prison is notorious for housing some of the most notorious criminals, including terrorists from the Boko Haram extremist group.

Despite ongoing investigations by the Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission regarding this case, which has involved questioning their staff over the past two days, Hill emphasized that Binance should handle the matter and not the wrongly imprisoned executive. He expressed this sentiment in a video posted on X, stating, “We want him home, and it’s Binance, his employer, who can deal with the Nigerians.”

Prior to the present situation, US legislators contacted President Joe Biden and a group of over 100 former prosecutors sent an appeal to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, urging for the freedom of Gambaryan. Among these lawmakers was Hill, who penned down the letter directed towards Biden.
