Rockstar Games generally doesn’t support modifications to their games unless there’s a potential for profit. Recently, the multiplayer mod for the 2006 game Bully, known as Bully Online, was taken down, demonstrating this pattern.
- The server hosting Bully Online was shut down just a month after its launch.
- On the mod’s official Discord, its creators announced that they are ceasing further work on the project.
- Furthermore, the source code was deleted, and all gameplay data and user information will be removed. Videos of Bully Online have also disappeared from the official YouTube channel, and the official website has stopped working.
The modders haven’t explained their reasoning, but it’s widely believed they were pressured by legal threats from Rockstar or Take-Two Interactive. Swegta, the project leader and a YouTuber, has announced a video detailing the situation will be released soon. Currently, the creators have only offered a brief statement.
Remember, we didn’t want this.
Multiplayer in the style of GTA Online
In short, this mod added a multiplayer experience to Bully, similar to GTA Online. Players could freely explore the open world as one of several characters, choosing to compete against or cooperate with others. The game was made more exciting with a variety of challenges and mini-games, including shooting battles and races.
It’s disappointing to see the project come to an end. Considering Bully is an older game from 19 years ago, the small community enjoying a custom multiplayer mode isn’t likely to impact the financial success of Rockstar or Take-Two Interactive.
