fans just got an official sneak peek at the official of the Kyoshi Warriors.
I recently learned from Variety that Dark Horse Comics is publishing a new Avatar: The Last Airbender comic series this summer. What’s really exciting is that it’s being developed with the original creators, Bryan Konietzko and Dante DiMartino. The series, called Avatar: The Last Airbender — The Kyoshi Warriors, is written by Brandon Hoáng, and features art from BellBessa and Xanthe Buoma. Adele Matera is handling the colors, Jimmy Betancourt is doing the lettering, and Danielle Weires created the cover art.
Avatar: The Last Airbender Reveals First Look for New ‘Kyoshi Warriors’ Ahead of May Release
I’m so excited for the new Avatar: The Last Airbender — The Kyoshi Warriors comic from Dark Horse! It’s going to follow Suki and the Kyoshi Warriors as they leave Kyoshi Island to help fight the Fire Nation. Apparently, it’s not going to be easy – people on the mainland are skeptical of them and they’ll have to work hard to earn the Earth Kingdom’s trust. The big question is, when they finally get their chance to prove themselves, will they stick to their principles, or will they have to make some tough choices to succeed?
Dark Horse Comics has been publishing stories based on Avatar: The Last Airbender since 2012, starting with The Promise. They’ve released eleven different stories featuring the original characters, collected in eight graphic novels and larger omnibuses. Additionally, Dark Horse has published many comics set in the world of the sequel series, The Legend of Korra.
The Kyoshi Warriors, first appearing in the fourth episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender titled “The Warriors of Kyoshi,” are a group inspired by Avatar Kyoshi. They come from Kyoshi Island, where each village has its own warrior band. The most well-known members are Suki, Mingxia, and, later in the series, Ty Lee.
Throughout Avatar: The Last Airbender, the Kyoshi Warriors played a key role in defeating Fire Lord Ozai’s army and ending the Hundred-Year War. Later, in the comics, they served as Zuko’s personal bodyguards after he became Fire Lord and took over from his father.
Actress Jessie Flower, who famously played Avatar Kyoshi, has expressed her enthusiasm for reprising the role in the new animated series, Avatar: Seven Havens. She stated she’d be eager to return, saying it would be a “joy” to participate. Flower has also read the Kyoshi novels and enjoyed signing copies for fans, adding that she “loves the role.”
The first comic book in the Avatar: The Last Airbender — The Kyoshi Warriors series, published by Dark Horse Comics, will be available in stores on May 6th.
