Amazon’s Prime Video has announced details about a new science fiction series created by the person behind a highly acclaimed Star Trek show. The recent popularity of Star Trek has led to several new shows, including the completed Star Trek: Discovery and the upcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy on Paramount+.
Mike McMahan, the creator of the animated comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks, is working with Dominic Dierkes, a producer from Solar Opposites, on a new adult animated series for Prime Video. The show, called Odd Jobs, is a sci-fi comedy that has already been officially ordered as a series.
Set in the year 2127, the comic series Odd Jobs depicts a bleak future where capitalism has run rampant. It follows a group of people surviving by completing various temporary jobs—’gig work’—across the Midwest. They find these jobs through an app simply called ‘ODD JOBS.’ The creators, McMahan and Dierkes, have hinted at what readers can expect from the series.
We were hiking in the wilderness when we unexpectedly fell through a portal and ended up centuries in the future. There, we saw disturbing visions of what might become of humanity. Instead of trying to prevent these potential outcomes, we decided to make an animated series based on them.
Titmouse, the animation studio behind shows like Prime Video’s The Mighty Nein and Netflix’s Haunted Hotel, will handle the animation for the series. Chris Prynoski, Shannon Prynoski, Antonio Canobbio, and Ben Kalina will executive produce through Titmouse, with Amie Karp also serving as an executive producer. Melissa Wolfe, Head of Animation at Amazon MGM Studios, shared positive comments about Odd Jobs.
“Odd Jobs” is a clever, quirky, and genuinely funny show that offers a wildly creative and entertaining vision of the future. Mike and Dominic have created a bold and unpredictable world with memorable characters, and we’re thrilled to be working with CBS Studios and Titmouse to share this new comedy with viewers on Prime Video globally.
This series is part of Prime Video’s growing collection of animated shows for adults. They’ve recently released popular titles like the musical comedy Hazbin Hotel, the action-packed superhero series Invincible, and the animated adaptation of the Critical Role campaign, The Legend of Vox Machina. Odd Jobs fits right in, adding another funny animated show to their lineup.
While details about the new series are still limited, the creators have a strong track record of success. Their previous shows, Star Trek: Lower Decks (with a 93% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes) and Solar Opposites (95%), are both highly praised. This suggests their new animated comedy, Odd Jobs, will be just as entertaining.
The series Odd Jobs is still being made, and we don’t know when it will be released yet. Even though production is early on, it looks like the Prime Video show will be funny and also explore ideas about challenging the way work and money often function. Whether it successfully combines these elements remains to be seen, but it has the potential to be both entertaining and thought-provoking.
