Hytale Is Not On Steam And May Never Be

Okay, Hytale is finally here after a decade of work! As a huge fan, I was checking Steam for it, but it turns out the developers, Hypixel, decided to release it only through their own app. It’s a bit weird, and I’ve been wondering why they didn’t go with Steam, and if maybe they’ll change their minds later. Here’s what I’ve found out about that.

Why not Steam?

According to executive producer Patrick Derbic, Hypixel decided to initially release Hytale through its own dedicated launcher to maintain close communication with its existing player base and community. Derbic explained that launching on Steam immediately could have led to a rush of initial, potentially negative, feedback that might have steered the game in the wrong direction.

Hypixel isn’t ignoring criticism, though. They actually welcome honest feedback, and even admit they’re often critical of their own work. They chose to release Hytale through their own launcher specifically to get valuable input from dedicated players early on, rather than letting initial reactions from those unfamiliar with the game’s development shape its direction.

Hytale could come to Steam later

Derbic explained that Steam is a fantastic platform for promotion, but Hypixel isn’t sure if Hytale will ever be released on it. They haven’t decided yet, so it’s still a possibility.

“This doesn’t mean Hytale will never be on Steam; right now, we don’t see the need for it, as we want to keep our launch closer to our community,” Derbic explained.

The developer explained that Steam doesn’t yet work with all of Hytale’s modding tools, but they plan to talk to Valve about finding solutions and seeing what can be done.

Hytale isn’t currently playable on consoles, but Hypixel has stated they plan to release it on those platforms eventually.

Steam is powerful

Steam is one of the biggest and most popular online stores for PC games, with millions of users visiting it daily. It sells games of all sizes, and is owned by Valve, who earn money from each sale. By launching independently, Hypixel will avoid paying Valve’s fees, although they may encounter fees from other platforms.

With so many games available and constantly being added, it can be hard to find what you’re looking for on Steam. However, the platform also offers a great opportunity for smaller, independent games to gain popularity and reach a large number of players.

Like Minecraft, which served as a model for Hytale, some games aren’t found on Steam. League of Legends, for example, uses its own application to launch. Other companies, such as EA and Ubisoft, have removed games from Steam for business reasons, but later put them back.

While platforms like GOG and the Epic Games Store have challenged Steam, none have achieved the same level of popularity or influence.
