Netflix’s “Addictive” Sci-Fi Horror Series That Was Canceled Too Soon Remains a Cult Favorite

As a huge movie buff, I’ve always been captivated by Dracula. It all started with Bela Lugosi in 1931, and ever since, Hollywood just can’t get enough of the character. There have been countless Dracula movies and tons of attempts to reimagine vampires in general – some were great, others… not so much. One interesting take was a Netflix series from 2019 that tried to explain vampires with science. It didn’t last long – just one season – but it’s become a bit of a cult classic, and honestly, I think every horror fan should check it out at least once.

The 10-episode sci-fi horror series, V Wars, was created from the comic books and short stories of author Jonathan Maberry. It debuted on Netflix on December 5, 2019, and offered a unique take on vampires. Instead of traditional, mythical creatures, the show portrayed vampires as people infected with an ancient disease released from the melting polar ice due to global warming. This scientific explanation accounted for classic vampire traits like a sensitivity to light, a need for blood, and changes in personality – replacing folklore with a logical, disease-based cause.

Featuring Ian Somerhalder, Adrian Holmes, Jacky Lai, and others, V Wars offered a unique and modern spin on the vampire genre. It successfully combined scientific concepts with horror elements, creating something new that resonated with viewers. While it shared some similarities with the earlier series The Strain, which premiered five years prior, it still felt fresh and engaging.

What really made the Netflix series stand out compared to the FX show was its detailed and immersive world. V Wars didn’t just focus on the vampire virus; it also explored the resulting political chaos and social unrest, making it feel incredibly relevant and realistic. Anyone familiar with Joe Maberry’s Joe Ledger books will recognize his talent for crafting these kinds of thrilling, believable stories. Here’s the official description of V Wars:

V Wars is a sci-fi horror show about Dr. Luther Swann, a doctor trying to stop a strange virus that’s released when Arctic ice melts. The virus turns people into vampires, causing chaos and a war between humans and the newly infected. Things get even more complicated when Swann’s close friend becomes a powerful vampire leader, making the situation deeply personal and forcing Swann to deal with the ethical, political, and scientific fallout of the spreading outbreak.

Why Was ‘V Wars’ Canceled By Netflix?

Netflix

I really enjoyed V Wars, and I was genuinely bummed to hear Netflix canceled it after just one season. It left so many storylines hanging, and honestly, fans were furious – and rightfully so! We were all left on a huge cliffhanger, wondering what happened next. The truth is, it wasn’t a creative decision; it all came down to numbers and business for the streaming service.

Despite having a dedicated fanbase, V Wars wasn’t watched by enough people to justify a second season on Netflix. It wasn’t that the show was poorly made—critics had mixed opinions—but ultimately, Netflix decided not to renew it based on viewership numbers. They simply determined it wasn’t financially viable to continue.
