Euphoria didn’t last long. „New” footprint of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake turned out to be a painful return to the past

Fans who were excited about the upcoming remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time briefly celebrated a new post from the ESRB, the American ratings board… only to discover it wasn’t what they’d hoped for.

While everyone eagerly anticipates GTA 6, Ubisoft is taking a long time with its own projects. The company is still developing Beyond Good & Evil 2, a game that’s been in the works for years and hasn’t seen much progress since being announced in 2017. They’re also reportedly working on a remake of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.

Currently, neither of these games has a confirmed release date. However, some players are hoping PoP might come out this month, though that seems unlikely unless Ubisoft speeds things up like Bethesda did with another game. That’s what many gamers initially believed, but recent information suggests otherwise.

Hope and bizarre platforms…

Insider Gaming reported that the ESRB has listed Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake in its database. This suggests the game is nearing completion and the developers are likely finalizing it for release.

The most notable detail is that Sands of Time is planned to release on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, but not on PlayStation 5 or the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. It’s surprising to see a release on older, eighth-generation consoles, considering current platforms are already over five years old. Skipping the newer PlayStation 5 feels like an odd choice, leading many to believe it might be an error.

Honestly, if they didn’t release the game on the Switch 2, I could almost get it – maybe it’s still too early for that console. But Ubisoft and Nintendo have always worked closely together, giving us special content and even games you couldn’t get anywhere else. I understood why they skipped the original Switch because of its hardware, but not having a version for a much more powerful system? That just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

… from an outdated ESRB entry

Fans hoping for news on the Prince of Persia remake were quickly disappointed. The listing turned out to be for an older version of the remake – the one Ubisoft put on hold when they restarted development. Essentially, they canceled the original project after switching development teams and adding a new one. Online users discovered that changing numbers in the webpage’s address brings up listings for games like Doom Eternal and Amnesia Rebirth, which were released around 2020. The Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake was initially planned for January 21, 2021, but Ubisoft delayed its release just a month before that date.

This could explain why the game isn’t available on certain consoles. It makes sense that it is on Xbox Series X/S, though, as Ubisoft has done similar things with other older titles, such as Digimon: Survive. There’s also speculation that Ubisoft has stopped using the word “remake” in the game’s title, but it’s not confirmed – though a financial report from last year did show it written in lowercase, suggesting a possible change in branding.

The ESRB rating doesn’t confirm that the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake is about to be released, even though recent leaks suggest it might be. It’s best not to assume it will happen until Ubisoft officially announces it. We’re still waiting for official news.
