Sophie Turner Discusses Tomb Raider TV Show And Her Intense Training For It

Sophie Turner, known for her role in Game of Thrones, is set to star as Lara Croft in the new Tomb Raider series coming to Prime Video. She’s recently shared details about how she’s getting ready for the role.

I was listening to an interview with Keeley Hawes, and she said something really interesting! She confirmed she’s actually never met Angelina Jolie, even though Angelina famously played Lara Croft in those Tomb Raider movies back in the early 2000s. She said she’d absolutely love to, though!

Turner is getting ready for the series by playing the video games and reading the comics, but she’s intentionally steering clear of the previous movies starring Angelina Jolie. She explained, ‘I want to develop my own interpretation of the character, so while I enjoy those films, watching them now would just lead me to copy her performance.’

Turner shared details about her intense physical preparation for the role, explaining she’s been training eight hours a day, five days a week, since February 2025. She added, “It’s been a lot of work.”

I’ve been following Turner, and honestly, she spends so much time at the gym – you can really see the dedication! She recently shared that all that work has unfortunately led to a constant back problem, which is a bummer to hear. It sounds like something she’ll just have to deal with long-term.

Turner explained that it’s generally easier to gain muscle if you’ve exercised regularly in the past. Since she hadn’t, she said it took her a long time – many months – to get in good shape.

Sophie Turner, known for her role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, often found her character on the receiving end of violence. She explained that, unlike her new role in Tomb Raider, where she’ll be taking the offensive, she was usually the one being attacked. She’s enjoying learning to fight back, saying, ‘It’s nice to learn how to throw a punch and not just take it.’

Filming for the Tomb Raider TV series starts this month. While details about the plot are still under wraps, the show will follow a woman who explores and robs ancient tombs. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, known for Fleabag, is the creative force behind the series, serving as creator, writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner with Chad Hodge. A release date hasn’t been announced yet.

The Tomb Raider TV show will star Ellie Turner as Lara Croft, alongside Jason Isaacs (known from Harry Potter) as her uncle Atlas, Sigourney Weaver as Evelyn Wallis, and Bill Baterson as Winston. You can find a complete cast list and character descriptions online.

Fans are really enjoying the 2018 Tomb Raider movie with Alicia Vikander, as it’s currently a huge hit on Netflix.

At The Game Awards in December 2025, two new Tomb Raider games were announced. A remake of the classic 1996 game, titled Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, is scheduled for release in 2026, followed by a brand new game, Tomb Raider: Catalyst, in 2027. Actress Alix Wilton Regan will be taking over the role of Lara Croft, replacing Camilla Luddington.
