George R.R. Martin, the creator of Game of Thrones, hints that he plans to continue writing stories set in the world of Westeros. However, he suggests these new stories might not be the next installment in the main Game of Thrones saga – the long-awaited The Winds of Winter. Instead, he’s indicated he may revisit the Tales of Dunk and Egg series, expanding on those stories instead.
George R.R. Martin has hinted at future stories featuring Dunk and Egg, detailing their adventures and what lies ahead for the characters. He revealed this on the first episode of the podcast, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which launched before the premiere of the new HBO series on Sunday.
Martin notes that any new stories featuring Dunk and Egg will depend on his availability. These tales are part of a series – the sixth in a planned seven books – that ultimately led to the creation of Game of Thrones and the A Song of Ice and Fire novels. The last book in the series, A Dance With Dragons, came out almost 15 years ago, around the same time the Game of Thrones TV show first aired.
George R.R. Martin’s first story featuring the characters Dunk and Egg, titled The Hedge Knight, was published in the 1998 collection Legends. It came out between the first book of A Song of Ice and Fire, A Game of Thrones, and its sequel, A Clash of Kings. Martin recently said on a podcast that writing this story was one of the best choices he ever made as an author.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Offers a Different Perspective on Game of Thrones’ World
George R.R. Martin continued the tales of Dunk and Egg with two more novellas: The Sworn Sword (2003) and The Mystery Knight (2010). These three stories were later compiled into one book, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, published in 2015. The characters in these novellas are different from the lords, nobles, and those vying for the throne who primarily populate Game of Thrones.
I wanted to tell a story centered on the common people – those who aren’t nobles, as I call them. They weren’t striving for power or the Iron Throne; they were just trying to live their lives. This story also lets me delve deeper into the ideas of chivalry and what truly makes a knight honorable, according to Martin.
HBO’s new series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is based on the book The Hedge Knight. It’s expected to continue the story through the following books in the series. Unlike Game of Thrones, this show is reported to be more lighthearted and funny, and it’s easier to follow because it centers on a single main character, Dunk, rather than a large ensemble cast.
In the early stages of Game of Thrones, I wrote from the perspectives of seven or eight different characters, constantly switching between them. As the series progressed, I added even more viewpoints. This created a complex story where people experienced and interpreted the same events in different ways. However, writing a shorter work, like a short story, focused on just one character’s perspective is a different, and often very impactful, approach.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will premiere on HBO on Jan. 18. It will also stream on HBO Max.
