ChatGPT-powered wedding actually makes new marriage invalid

A married couple in the Netherlands had their marriage annulled because part of their wedding ceremony included a speech written by ChatGPT. It’s true – the use of AI was a factor in the annulment.

Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly common in everyday life. While it can sometimes simplify tasks and save time, especially at work, its usefulness isn’t always guaranteed.

It’s been shown that artificial intelligence doesn’t always make things easier. In fact, it can sometimes create new challenges, even for simple tasks like ordering food, as people struggle to interact with the technology.

A couple in the Netherlands experienced a setback in their relationship when they discovered the person officiating their wedding had used ChatGPT to write their vows.

Marriage annulled over ChatGPT speech

A couple from Zwolle, Netherlands, who married in April 2025, had their marriage officially canceled on January 7, 2026, according to Reuters.

According to the report, the person leading the wedding ceremony read a speech written by ChatGPT, which means the couple didn’t make genuine vows to each other.

The AI-created speech featured phrases like “more than just husband and wife, we’re a team, a fun couple, and each other’s greatest support,” and “keep encouraging, playfully bothering, and loving each other, even through tough times.”

As per the court’s decision, they’ve asked for the marriage to be removed from the Zwolle registry.

While the court recognizes the significance of the date on the marriage certificate to the couple, it must ultimately follow the law.

It’s unclear if the couple has remarried since the court’s decision, or if they intend to. Sending out a second set of wedding invitations could be a bit strange, though.
