Scream 7 Will Officially Bring Back 5 Major Actors from the First Movie

The latest Scream movie, Scream 7, aimed to recapture the feel of the very first film by bringing back some of the original cast and crew. However, the movie faced challenges during production, including the exits of stars Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, as well as the directors of the previous two installments. Good news for fans: Neve Campbell will return, and Kevin Williamson, who created the Scream franchise, stepped in to direct. Filming began in January 2025.

The popular horror series Scream successfully updated itself with the 2022 film by carefully blending the old with the new. It did this by featuring a new generation of main characters, commenting on how fans interact with horror movies today, and still including beloved characters like Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers, and Dewey Riley. This showed the franchise could grow and change while staying true to what made it popular in the first place.

The latest installment, Scream VI, marks the biggest departure yet for the series, largely due to Neve Campbell’s decision not to return. This came after talks about her salary stalled, and she expressed feeling that her contributions to the franchise weren’t adequately appreciated.

Unlike previous installments, Scream 7 seems to be going back to its roots. After some changes behind the scenes and with the departure of recent lead actors, the new movie is bringing back well-known characters and focusing on the original story to create a sense of stability.

5 Scream 1 Actors Returning for Scream 7

Neve Campbell

In the first Scream movie, Neve Campbell played Sidney Prescott, the heart of the series. She was a teenager haunted by her mother’s murder and relentlessly pursued by the Ghostface killer, but she managed to cleverly overcome and defeat Billy Loomis and Stu Macher.

Sidney Prescott will be back as a central character in Scream 7, following her absence in Scream VI. She now lives in Pine Grove, Indiana, with her husband, police chief Mark Evans (Joel McHale), and their three children. After years of being targeted by Ghostface, Sidney has tried to create a peaceful life for her family, moving away from the violence that has haunted her.

The sense of security will likely disappear when a new Ghostface appears and starts targeting her daughter, Tatum (Isabel May).

The movie tells two interconnected stories: one follows Sidney as she leads a group of survivors, while the other centers on Tatum and her friends. As the body count rises, their paths cross. Sidney doesn’t just face a new killer, but also the haunting echoes of the past – through realistic AI recreations of previous Ghostface killers, and hints of a dangerous Ghostface-inspired cult that’s been growing in Woodsboro.

Courtney Cox

Courteney Cox first appeared in the original Scream as Gale Weathers, a determined reporter. Initially, Gale’s drive and questionable ethics put her at odds with Sidney, but as the murders in Woodsboro unfolded, the two women eventually developed a respectful understanding.

I’m really excited for Scream 7! From what I’ve heard, Gale Weathers will be back in action as the experienced reporter we know and love. She’ll be pulled into the mystery of the new murders in Pine Grove, and it sounds like she’ll have a competitive journalist giving her a run for her money too!

David Arquette

David Arquette played Dewey Riley in Scream, a good-hearted, but often overlooked, deputy sheriff in Woodsboro. The death of his sister, Tatum (played by Rose McGowan), deeply affected him and drove his character’s journey throughout the film.

Even after being stabbed, Dewey managed to survive the first movie and became a symbol of strength and goodness throughout the Scream series, until his death in the 2022 film.

Everyone’s buzzing about Billy Loomis potentially coming back in Scream 7, and the word is it won’t be a straightforward return. Most people think it’ll involve flashbacks, maybe even hallucinations, or some other creative way to bring him into the story without, you know, actually bringing him back. Honestly, his casting was a total shock! No one really saw that one coming, and it’s got me so excited to see how they pull it off.

Matthew Lillard

In the original Scream movie, Matthew Lillard played Stu Macher, one of the two people behind the Ghostface mask. He was ultimately killed by Sidney using a television.

While most fans don’t think Stu Macher will actually be back in Scream 7, many believe Matthew Lillard will return as the voice of Ghostface. The new Ghostface will likely use AI and deepfake technology to recreate Stu’s voice and psychologically target Sidney.

Most fans believe Stu is intentionally meant to mislead viewers, similar to how past Scream movies have used false leads. The killer seems to be using Stu’s history to create confusion, rather than trying to prove he didn’t actually die in the first film.

Roger L. Jackson

Roger L. Jackson created the iconic and terrifying voice of Ghostface in the movie Scream. His chilling and taunting delivery built intense psychological fear before each attack, becoming a defining characteristic of the franchise.

Even though you don’t see him on screen, his work has been crucial in defining the killer’s personality over the last three decades, just as much as the actor who plays the part.
