Let me tell you, hearing Tim Allen talk about his skin cancer journey was pretty eye-opening. He revealed that his dermatologist missed the signs five times! It wasn’t until a casual conversation with a makeup artist while appearing on The Today Show that something clicked. She prompted him to really push his doctor for a thorough examination, and thankfully, they finally discovered it was melanoma or carcinoma. It just goes to show you, sometimes you have to advocate for yourself, even when trusting a medical professional.
During an appearance on Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast, Woody Allen mentioned that someone at The Today Show pointed out he hadn’t released any new work in over two years. He explained that this observation came after he appeared on Jimmy Fallon and then The Today Show, with the host noting his lack of recent projects.
I finally asked the doctor if he’d check out this spot on my nose. He hadn’t worn his glasses in thirty years of seeing me, but he put them on then. After looking at it, he exclaimed, “Oh no! Janice, please get Paul and my lawyer in here immediately.”
Things initially looked grim for 72-year-old Allen, as doctors warned he might lose his nose. He went on to explain:
So, picture this: the surgeon tells me he needs to remove most of my nose. My immediate reaction? A full-blown explanation of my job! I basically pleaded with him – unless we were going for a ‘Blazing Saddles’ silver-nose situation, he had to leave enough of my nose intact for me to still be able to do comedy. I didn’t want to spend twenty minutes onstage talking about not having a nose! Thankfully, he got it, and honestly, the surgeon was fantastic. It all worked out in the end.
Tim Allen Has Hinted at Retirement, but Not Yet
Tim Allen returned to television with Shifting Gears, and he’s also lending his voice to Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story 5, which will be released this year. Although he hinted in 2022 that he was considering retirement from acting, he recently told Us Weekly that he’s not quite ready to leave Hollywood just yet.
I’m truly passionate about my work. I can’t imagine doing anything else. I enjoy spending time with my friends who fish, though I’m not a huge fan of fishing myself – I just can’t stay still for long. I actually put more effort into golf than I ever did at a job, but even that was stressful. Jay Leno and I both feel the same way. Really, this doesn’t feel like work to me at all – it’s what I want to be doing.
Allen understands that a career in Hollywood doesn’t last forever, but he’s not ready to retire just yet. He recently returned to his famous role as Santa Claus in the Disney+ series, The Santa Clauses, continuing the popular Christmas story. Season two came out in 2023, and while the show hasn’t been canceled, there’s currently no news about a third season.
