The growing popularity of artificial intelligence is contributing to the continuing shortage of memory chips worldwide. This shortage is expected to impact smartphone production, but Samsung’s co-CEO, T.M. Roh, also cautions that it could lead to fewer available TVs and home appliances, and potentially higher prices for those products.
Speaking with Reuters, Samsung’s Roh stated that the current situation is unique and will affect all companies. He explained that TV and appliance production will be impacted by parts shortages, and price increases are possible as a result. As the world’s leading TV manufacturer, Samsung anticipates these effects from the RAM shortage will be unavoidable.
Increasing prices for electronics could really disrupt Microsoft’s plan to expand Xbox gaming beyond consoles. More and more devices, like smart TVs – including those from Samsung – are now able to stream Xbox Game Pass games.
The only encouraging part of Roh’s statement was his mention that Samsung is collaborating with its manufacturers to lessen the effects of the current memory chip shortages.
A new report indicates Nvidia might try to address rising GPU costs by bringing back the GeForce RTX 3060, a model they previously stopped making. Nvidia hasn’t confirmed this, but they discontinued the RTX 3060 to focus on the newer, more powerful – and more expensive – 40 and 50 series GPUs.
Samsung announced it will integrate Google’s Gemini AI into 800 million devices this year, which is expected to drive continued demand for RAM in all of its products.
