Gerard Butler is back in another disaster movie, Greenland 2: Migration, continuing the story from 2020’s Greenland. The new film takes place five years later and follows Butler as he tries to protect his family again, this time facing a new global catastrophe. While the first movie was surprisingly gripping and heartfelt, Butler is no stranger to action-packed disaster roles.
Many fans will recall Gerard Butler’s film Geostorm, where a weather-control system goes haywire and unleashes devastating storms worldwide. Although the movie received poor reviews, its spectacular destruction made it memorable, and it remains one of Butler’s strongest performances in the disaster genre. Another early role that stands out is 2002’s Reign of Fire, where he starred with Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey in a story about dragon slayers.
‘Reign of Fire’ Features a Dragon Apocalypse & Stellar Cast

Buena Vista Pictures
Directed by Rob Bowman, known for his work on The X-Files, Reign of Fire presents a world where miners accidentally awaken a dragon that has been sleeping for centuries. The film begins with a dramatic and frightening escape sequence, immediately establishing the central conflict. Twenty years later, the world has been reduced to a desolate, ash-covered landscape, as dragons roam and consume everything in their path.
Christian Bale stars as Quinn, the leader of a group of survivors – including families with children. He’s assisted by Creedy, played by Gerard Butler. They work to provide food and shelter for their community within a stone castle, one of the few places safe from the dragons’ fiery attacks. Beyond the constant dragon threat, Quinn and Creedy face opposition from other survivors who disagree with their methods. To make matters even more complicated, a loud and assertive group of American dragon hunters arrive on the scene.
‘Reign of Fire’ Lets Audiences Skydive With Dragons

Buena Vista Pictures
Matthew McConaughey stars as Denton Van Zan, a man on a mission to eliminate dragons. Initially, other survivors dismiss his claims, but his arrival in a helicopter proves he’s taking control of the skies. Van Zan leads a skilled team of soldiers with a proven track record and a fearless attitude. Beyond the already harsh world of Reign of Fire, the film delivers thrilling action, including a unique and breathtaking scene of soldiers skydiving with dragons. The story culminates in a massive showdown against the biggest dragon of all, with the fate of humanity hanging in the balance.
Reign of Fire is a thrilling combination of monster movie and post-apocalyptic story, set in a world devastated by dragons. The film’s special effects still look great today, making it a solid choice for fans of apocalyptic films, especially if you enjoyed Greenland and Gerard Butler’s performance in it.

I recently revisited Reign of Fire, and it’s fascinating to remember seeing it back when Christian Bale and Gerard Butler weren’t the huge stars they are today. It really feels like a little time capsule! Interestingly, the film has gained a new following because of how famous they’ve become. While it’s a very different apocalyptic world than we see in Greenland, I have to say, Reign of Fire remains one of Butler’s most genuinely fun end-of-the-world movies.
