With filming for the new movie starting in New Zealand, one of the writers of The Hunt for Gollum is sharing details about what viewers can anticipate. The film, directed by Andy Serkis, is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 17, 2027.

Writer Philippa Boyens recently discussed the first Lord of the Rings movie with Empire magazine, which was celebrating its 25th anniversary. She described it as both an exciting adventure and a deeply psychological story. Boyens co-wrote the entire Lord of the Rings film trilogy, starting with the 2001 release.

Boyens mentioned seeing Andy Serkis, who is both directing and playing Gollum again, filming some test shots. She was impressed by his physical fitness on set, joking that he needs to start looking older for the role. She recounted telling him, ‘Right, assume the position,’ and being amazed by how easily he climbed the motion capture equipment.

Andy Serkis recently told Empire magazine about his return to New Zealand to reprise his role as Gollum/Smeagol in the latest Lord of the Rings film. He described it as significant to revisit a character he first played over twenty years ago, and added that it was special to be involved in the film while also acknowledging the impact of the original director, Peter Jackson, whose work has resonated with audiences for the past twenty-five years.
