Hooded Horse, the publisher of popular strategy games like Endless Legend 2, Terra Invicta, and Against the Storm, has announced it won’t allow AI-generated art in any of its games. The company, known for supporting successful titles such as Manor Lords, is taking a firm stance against using artificial intelligence for creating game assets, especially as other publishers are exploring its potential.
Hooded Horse CEO Tim Bender recently told Kotaku that the company prohibits the use of AI-generated art in games they publish. He explained this is now a standard clause in all their contracts, stating they won’t accept any AI-created assets. Bender also admitted that the rise of AI tools has personally made his job more challenging, expressing frustration that it’s created more work for his team.
The problem with generative AI (GenAI) is that it’s easy to accidentally end up in the final product, even if it was only meant as a temporary stand-in. As a result, some experts are now advising developers to avoid using GenAI tools at all stages of their work, as Bender explained.
Avoiding these mistakes takes continuous attention to detail. As one developer, Bender, explained, it’s a constant process of monitoring and fixing issues before they become major problems – he likened them to a cancer. This isn’t a new concern; the game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 lost its ‘Indie Game of the Year’ award when players discovered temporary, unfinished AI elements that had been left in the final version.
Generative AI is now common – and often debated – in the world of video game development and technology as a whole. The use of AI by Larian, the creators of Baldur’s Gate 3, drew criticism from both developers and players, leading to an explanation from Larian’s CEO, Swen Vincke. Meanwhile, the team behind Arc Raiders, Embark, has stood by their use of AI for converting text to speech. Neowitz, the publisher of Lies of P, has highlighted how AI has helped them work more efficiently. Even Pope Leo has spoken out, urging those creating AI to prioritize ethical considerations in their work.
