Although established sci-fi series like Star Wars and Star Trek have had varying degrees of success, Dune and Avatar have become major franchises. On streaming platforms, Apple TV has distinguished itself as a go-to destination for science fiction television, with popular shows including Foundation, Silo, and Pluribus.
It’s interesting to note that the most acclaimed sci-fi movie and TV show of the 21st century are actually linked together.
Alcon Entertainment Was Behind Blade Runner 2049
In 2011, Alcon Entertainment acquired the rights to make a sequel to Ridley Scott’s iconic 1982 film, Blade Runner. The resulting film, Blade Runner 2049, was a highly successful follow-up that lived up to the original’s reputation.
While Blade Runner 2049 didn’t make a massive amount of money at the box office – earning just over $276 million – it was a critical and popular hit, currently holding an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film skillfully built upon the story of the original Blade Runner while also forging its own path, acting as a strong continuation of the series. Plus, with Roger Deakins as the cinematographer, it’s easily one of the most visually stunning movies of the 21st century, regardless of genre.
While films like Arrival, Dune, and The Martian are strong contenders for the best sci-fi of the 21st century, Blade Runner 2049 is definitely a major part of that discussion. Talk of a sequel began long before Alcon Entertainment got involved, but they were the ones who ultimately made it happen, delivering a follow-up that Blade Runner fans will likely enjoy for years to come.
Alcon Entertainment Was Also Behind The Expanse
While choosing the best science fiction movie of the 21st century is difficult, picking the greatest sci-fi TV show of the last 25 years is easier. The Expanse, originally on Syfy and later on Amazon, is a remarkably well-made and impressive television series.
Originally a series of books by James S.A. Corey, The Expanse was adapted for television, with Alcon Entertainment acquiring the rights in 2013. The show premiered two years later and ran for six seasons. Even four years after its conclusion, The Expanse is remembered for its beautiful visuals, compelling story, and well-developed characters.
Similar to how they approached Blade Runner, Alcon Entertainment treated The Expanse with respect by closely following the novels. They adapted roughly one book per season, which allowed them to fully develop the story’s themes and ideas.
Both The Expanse and Blade Runner 2049 are highlights of Alcon’s work, and it’s remarkable that each could be considered the best of the 21st century in its category.
Although Blade Runner 2049 and The Expanse have very different creative teams and feel quite unique, they both excel at what makes great science fiction: realistic settings, richly developed worlds, and stories centered around believable characters.
