Since the title Godzilla X Kong: Supernova was announced, fans have been speculating about its significance. The last Monsterverse film, The New Empire, featured a new villain with plans to dominate the planet, which made the film’s subtitle fitting.
After the first look at Supernova, Godzilla fans immediately started guessing which alien monsters from past Godzilla movies might appear in the Monsterverse. In December 2025, well over a year before the film came out, a listing on the Writer’s Guild of America website appeared to confirm that SpaceGodzilla – a very powerful, cosmic version of Godzilla – would be included.
If SpaceGodzilla is as powerful as he was in his first appearance in the 1994 film Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, he’ll be a serious enough threat to force Godzilla and Kong to put aside their differences and work together again. But his arrival also raises a tricky question about the monster who’s been central to the last two movies.
Kong Can’t Go Toe-To-Toe With SpaceGodzilla
The movie Godzilla vs. Kong clearly showed that Godzilla is the more powerful of the two Titans. While Kong is strong and his axe and special gauntlet give him a fighting chance, Godzilla’s size, strength, and atomic breath ultimately make him too much for Kong in a direct fight.
SpaceGodzilla appeared in just one movie, and he was an incredibly powerful foe – even Godzilla struggled to defeat him. It took a lot of assistance from the robot monster Moguera to finally destroy SpaceGodzilla, whose attacks using psychic powers, energy beams, and crystals seemed impossible to overcome.
SpaceGodzilla joining the Monsterverse creates a tough problem: how can Kong effectively fight him? Kong is a normal mammal covered in fur, making him especially weak against energy blasts. Even with his axe and armored gauntlet, he’ll likely struggle to defend against SpaceGodzilla’s powerful beams and psychic/earth-moving abilities.
How Kong Could Play Into Defeating SpaceGodzilla
A popular idea about how Kong will factor into the fight with SpaceGodzilla is that he’ll play a similar role to Moguera in the original movie. Instead of directly battling SpaceGodzilla, Kong will likely focus on destroying the crystals that give SpaceGodzilla his power, leaving Godzilla to deliver the final blow. This is based on the original film where Moguera weakened SpaceGodzilla by destroying those crystals.
In Supernova, Kong might play a support role similar to how he helped in past battles, disabling SpaceGodzilla while Godzilla does the fighting. While Kong’s axe has been crucial in defeating previous enemies, it’s probable he’d use his intelligence to help Godzilla in a different way, perhaps by providing strategic assistance instead of directly fighting.
Considering how popular Kong is and how much money he can bring in, it’s hard to imagine him being completely removed from the story. He’ll likely play a role in the final fight. However, it makes sense that he takes a less central position in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, since the main villain seems much more powerful than him.
