The sequel to the popular animated film Zootopia is proving to be a box office success, surpassing the earnings of the original movie. The first Zootopia, released in 2016, earned over $1 billion worldwide. Both films feature the voices of Ginnifer Goodwin as Judy Hopps and Jason Bateman as Nick Wilde, a rabbit and fox who team up in a city full of human-like animals.
Although Zootopia 2 has earned over $1.47 billion globally—thanks to strong international sales and a particularly enthusiastic response in China—by the end of 2025, it still hadn’t surpassed the original Zootopia‘s $341.3 million in domestic box office earnings.
Things have changed recently. According to data from The Numbers, Zootopia 2 earned another $6.7 million in the U.S. on New Year’s Day. This brought its total domestic earnings to $344.6 million, surpassing the original Zootopia film’s lifetime domestic gross by a little over $3 million.
With its success, Zootopia 2 (2025) is now the fourth-highest-grossing Disney animated film ever in the United States and Canada. It trails only Frozen (2013, $400.9 million), Moana 2 (2024, $460.4 million), and Frozen II (2019, $477.4 million).
It’s still uncertain how successful Zootopia 2 will ultimately be in theaters, both in the US and around the world. However, its upcoming sixth weekend looks promising. Although Avatar: Fire and Ash is predicted to remain the top movie, there are no significant new releases on January 2nd, which means existing films like Zootopia 2 have a good chance to continue attracting viewers.
The film won’t face any new competition in theaters until February 13th, when the animated comedy Goat is released. This gives it a chance to continue its strong performance and climb Disney’s list of all-time domestic box office hits. Positive reviews for Zootopia 2 – a 90% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 96% ‘Verified Hot’ score on Popcornmeter – are helping to drive its success.
While Zootopia 2 is already a global box office success, surpassing Frozen II‘s worldwide earnings, it still needs to perform strongly in North America to become Disney’s highest-grossing animated film there. Its impressive start to 2026 suggests it could achieve this and have a record-breaking run in theaters.
