A key scene in the Stranger Things finale suggests a hopeful outcome for two characters, while also cleverly referencing the very beginning of the show.
Created by twin brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, Stranger Things was first proposed over ten years ago. Netflix was the streaming service that eventually decided to produce the show, recognizing the potential of the brothers’ sci-fi series inspired by classic stories.
After ten years, the show has become a massive success, breaking viewership records for the streaming service and launching its young actors to international fame.
The creators, the Duffer brothers, still remember what inspired them in the first place, and that’s reflected in a key moment at the end of the story which ties back to their initial concept.
‘Montauk’ is a secret Stranger Things Easter egg

Over ten years ago, the Duffer brothers created a found footage film called The Montauk Experiment, drawing inspiration from the ‘Montauk Project’ conspiracy theory.
When their initial plan didn’t work out, they shifted their focus to a TV series called ‘Montauk.’ They developed a script for the first episode, a presentation package, and even a sample trailer. This concept was ultimately successful, and ‘Montauk’ later evolved into the show ‘Stranger Things.’
Fans familiar with the show’s backstory will appreciate a moment in the finale where Hopper reveals he’s been offered a job in a new town – Montauk.
Ross Duffer explained to Netflix that they included the Montauk reference as a nod to dedicated fans. He said the show was initially planned to take place in Montauk, and they wanted to give those who knew that early idea a little inside joke.
Don’t anticipate a new series based on that location featuring Hopper and Joyce. According to Ross Duffer, who spoke with Deadline, the idea of a “Montauk” spinoff is just a nod to longtime fans who remember the show originally started with that concept.
