Gerard Butler is known for action movies, but not all of them are big hits in theaters. Luckily, many of his films find a second life through streaming. Tubi is a popular, completely free streaming service, and it’s already hosted several of Butler’s action films, including Den of Thieves, Machine Gun Preacher, Law Abiding Citizen, and 300. Now, his big sci-fi action movie, Geostorm, is available on Tubi, giving it a chance to reach a wider audience.
Starting January 1, 2026, you can watch the movie Geostorm for free on Tubi. Released in 2017, the film was directed by Dean Devlin and stars Gerard Butler as Jake Lawson, a satellite designer. The story takes place in a world plagued by natural disasters, where a network of satellites was created to control the weather. When these satellites are compromised, Jake has to figure out who—or what—is responsible before it’s too late. While the plot is quite outlandish and relies heavily on action movie tropes, it doesn’t quite live up to its potential despite Butler’s performance. Here’s a brief description of the film:
Following a wave of devastating natural disasters, world leaders collaborated on a complex satellite system designed to regulate the Earth’s climate and ensure everyone’s safety. However, the system has malfunctioned, and is now endangering the planet. A desperate attempt to identify the true danger begins, as a catastrophic global geostorm threatens to destroy all life on Earth.
The movie Geostorm featured a large cast, including Gerard Butler, Abbie Cornish, Jim Sturgess, Ed Harris, Andy Garcia, Alexandra Maria Lara, Robert Sheehan, Zazie Beetz, and Daniel Wu. Warner Bros. invested $120 million in the film, hoping for a blockbuster. While Geostorm earned $221 million worldwide – enough to cover its costs – it didn’t perform as well as the studio had hoped. Combined with negative reviews, the film was generally seen as a disappointment.
‘Geostorm’ Was Slated by Critics and Audiences

Warner Bros. Pictures
Even when Gerard Butler stars in a poorly received movie, it usually still finds viewers. However, Geostorm was a rare exception – it actually disappointed many of his fans. Critics overwhelmingly disliked the film, giving it a score of only 18% on Rotten Tomatoes. While audiences were a little more forgiving, they still didn’t rate it highly, awarding it a score of 35%.

One Rotten Tomatoes user bluntly advised against watching the film, but conceded that if someone insisted, they should skip the first ninety minutes. Another reviewer criticized the movie for attempting too many genres – disaster, political thriller, and action – without successfully executing any of them. And one particularly scathing review followed…
If you remember the days of going to video rental stores, this movie feels like one of those low-budget releases. Despite having some recognizable actors, the script feels cheap and the performances are flat, especially from the supporting characters who seem to be there just for show. The film also relies on the tired and predictable trope of a stereotypical evil white male villain, unfortunately reinforcing it even further.
