While viewers naturally want a perfect outcome for everyone, that wouldn’t feel true to life. Each character has experienced loss and will continue to carry emotional pain and sadness with them.

Despite its ambitious sci-fi ideas and spectacular finale – featuring moments like the underwater scene reminiscent of The Abyss and the intense fight with the Mind Flayer – Stranger Things is ultimately a story about its characters. The Season 5 finale delivers exactly what fans wanted: meaningful moments for each character, including a heartwarming scene that highlights the enduring bond between Nancy Wheeler, Robin Buckley, Jonathan Byers, and Steve Harrington.

Each arc ends nicely. Nancy’s the budding journalist she always wanted to be, and her decision to drop out of college feels rebellious and cool, proving she has found confidence after harrowing experiences. Seeing Joyce (Winona Ryder) and Hopper finally engaged over dinner was genuinely heartwarming – you just want them to have a peaceful life in Montauk, with Jonathan and Will close by. And thankfully, our core group of friends made it through! Though, we’re all still holding our breath for Eleven. But honestly, the final scene of Season 5, Episode 8? It wrecked me in the best way. After five seasons of monsters and mayhem, the kids sitting down to play Dungeons & Dragons, and Mike using the game to paint a picture of their futures… it was perfect. He wishes Eleven happiness, safety, and a place to belong, and the simple ‘we believe’ from the others… it’s a beautiful payoff to everything we’ve watched. Seriously, if you weren’t tearing up, check your pulse.

Mike is a natural storyteller with a bright future as a writer. It’s fun to picture Dustin enjoying both college studies and time with Steve. A true ending to Stranger Things wouldn’t be complete without Max and Lucas finally together, and Will finding love and self-acceptance.

The finale isn’t flawless – some viewers wished the fight with Vecna had lasted longer and were left wondering what happened to Murray.
