Be aware, there are minor spoilers for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 ahead! Director Emma Tammi has revealed that Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 includes hidden references, or ‘Easter eggs,’ related to the Shadow animatronics from the original game. Both Five Nights movies have been well-received by fans for staying true to the game’s story and including these kinds of hidden details.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 really built on the foundation laid by the first film. The writers, Tammi and Cawthon, explored the game’s universe more thoroughly, expanding the storyline and introducing elements like multiple Freddy Fazbear locations and new animatronics, most notably the sinister Marionette. Fans who played the original games have been excitedly sharing discoveries and theories online, pointing out hidden clues and direct references to the source material.
Director Emma Tammi recently spoke with ScreenRant about the movie’s release and addressed fan speculation about hidden references, or ‘Easter eggs,’ to the character Shadow Freddy from Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. While she confirmed that Shadow Freddy doesn’t appear in the film, she did confirm that fans were right to spot Shadow Bonnie.
After hearing these ideas, Tammi called the fans’ detailed analysis of the Five Nights sequel “the best thing ever,” even suggesting she might learn something from their discussions on Reddit. Comparing this to how Taylor Swift fans eagerly search for hidden meanings in her work, and the debate over which clues are intentional versus those Swift embraces after the fact, Tammi recognized that maintaining direct interaction with fans creates a unique and thriving community for any popular franchise.
She explained that a common thread among different fan communities is their incredibly detailed theorizing, which essentially builds a wealth of new story elements. This collaborative process turns the relationship between creators and fans into a shared, evolving experience. She pointed out that the Five Nights at Freddy’s series has even incorporated fan theories into its official storyline, and she believes this blending of creative input is a really powerful thing.
It’s amazing how ideas fans create and discuss online sometimes become official parts of a story’s history. This back-and-forth between creators and fans is a really powerful thing, and it’s likely why communities like those around Taylor Swift and Five Nights at Freddy’s are so engaged – they feel like they’re part of the process.
Shadow versions of the animatronics from Five Nights at Freddy’s first appeared in the 2014 sequel, with Shadow Freddy and Shadow Bonnie (also known as RWQFSFASXC). These characters initially looked damaged, with glowing eyes and teeth. While their appearance was updated in later games, they started as hidden Easter eggs for players. Eventually, they became important characters in minigames that revealed more of the game’s story.
In Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, Tammi secretly included Shadow Bonnie as an Easter egg later in the game. When the player, as Mike (voiced by Josh Hutcherson), investigates the original Freddy Fazbear’s to deal with the new, ‘Toy’ animatronics, a quick glimpse of Shadow Bonnie can be spotted while shining a flashlight down a hallway – it’s a very brief appearance, similar to how easily this character can be missed while playing the game.
While Shadow animatronics weren’t central to the plot in previous games, it’s possible we’ll see more of them in a potential Five Nights at Freddy’s 3. The creator, Tammi, has hinted at looking into fan theories, suggesting that Shadow Bonnie from Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 could be just the first of several Shadow animatronic variations. As the story delves deeper into the history of William Afton (played by Matthew Lillard) and his victims, these shadowy characters might play a larger role.
