A superhero film from 2025 that didn’t initially succeed in theaters is now finding a large audience online. Though it was overlooked in cinemas, it’s become a streaming hit, proving more popular than expected nearly a year after its release.
The new Marvel movie, Captain America: Brave New World, is quickly becoming a hit with streamers. FlixPatrol data shows it’s currently the tenth most popular movie on Google TV, available to rent or buy, including viewers internationally. The film is also performing well domestically, ranking as the thirteenth most popular movie on Disney+ this year, and is also available on Hulu.
Starring Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, the 2025 Marvel film follows his journey to fully become Captain America after receiving the mantle from Steve Rogers in Avengers: Endgame. He’ll face numerous challenges, including a conflict with the new President of the United States, a dangerous terrorist group led by Sidewinder (Giancarlo Esposito), and the villain known as the Leader (Tim Blake Nelson). Captain America: Brave New World is the fourth film in the Captain America series and the 35th movie in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The streaming popularity of Captain America: Brave New World is a positive sign for the future of the Captain America series, despite the film receiving mixed reviews when it came out in February 2025. Critics gave it a 46% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which was the lowest score of any Captain America movie by a significant margin. This likely contributed to the film’s disappointing box office performance, earning $415 million on a nearly $200 million budget. Interestingly, it still outperformed another 2025 Marvel movie, Thunderbolts, which received better reviews.
After reappearing on streaming services, Captain America: Brave New World seems to be gaining more traction with Marvel fans than originally thought. This echoes what’s been happening since the movie first came out – while early reviews weren’t great, many viewers have come to appreciate it after watching it more than once. This is reflected in its Rotten Tomatoes audience score, which is significantly higher – a full twenty-nine points above the critics’ rating.
Captain America: Brave New World Deserves a Critical Reassessment
Okay, I have to say, I really don’t get all the negativity around Captain America: Brave New World. It’s landed itself in a pretty rough spot, being one of only three Marvel movies to get a ‘Rotten’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes – alongside Eternals and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Look, it’s not the best Marvel film ever made, but honestly, I think it’s way better than a lot of people are giving it credit for. It deserves another look!
The most compelling aspect of Brave New World is its central character. He’s a surprisingly strong figure as he strives to become the new Captain America, both honoring Steve Rogers’ legacy and forging his own path. His internal struggles with confidence, the pressure of public opinion, and difficult moral choices make his story engaging throughout The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Brave New World. Even if the overall plot is complicated, his personal journey remains consistently powerful.
In Captain America 4, Harrison Ford delivers a compelling performance as President Ross. The experienced actor fully embodies the character, portraying a man with good intentions who is haunted by his past. His change into the Red Hulk is both frightening and unexpectedly enjoyable.
While Captain America: Brave New World isn’t perfect – some effects look dated and certain plot points feel rushed – it’s still an enjoyable movie. Despite its flaws, it was unfairly criticized when it first came out. Now that it’s popular on streaming, hopefully, this Captain America sequel will finally get the appreciation it deserves.
Captain America: Brave New World is streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.
